Of all the personal computers to be unwrapped during the holiday season, more than 80 percent will be used to go online and search the Web's more than 92 million gigabytes of data (comparable to a 2 billion-volume encyclopedia). Getting online is the easy part, finding a useful Web page is a bit harder—keeping track of a useful Web page is another issue altogether.

People have devised many tricks—such as sending e-mails to themselves or jotting on sticky notes—for keeping track of Web pages, but William Jones and Harry Bruce at the University of Washington's Information School and Susan Dumais of Microsoft Research have found that often people don't use any of them when it comes time to revisit a Web page. Instead, they rely on their ability to find the Web page all over again.

Failure is not an option, it's mandatory. "For more than three decades, the Republican Party has relied on the "culture war" to rescue their chances every four years, from Richard Nixon's campaign against the liberal news media to George H. W. Bush's campaign against the liberal flag-burners. In this culture war, the real divide is between "regular people" and an endlessly scheming "liberal elite." This strategy allows them to depict themselves as friends of the common people even as they gut workplace safety rules and lay plans to turn Social Security over to Wall Street. Most important, it has allowed Republicans to speak the language of populism."

An opinion about how the surety of losing wins votes for the Republican party.

Out of Doc's mouth to our hearts and
souls

Doc Searls sees it as it is - in so far as Apple's role in our industry is concerned.  Anything that can facilitate the development of personal publishing is fine by me.

This is the continuation of the journey started by macroMind when we first started selling 'Creativity Tools' back in 1984.

Macwhirled.

Had an interesting day at Macworld yesterday. As expected, Apple didn't provide wi-fi net connections during the keynote, but I had a fun time hanging out in virtual space with other journalists there, notably a crowd led by Adam Engst, who put up a wi-fi LAN and facilitated group note taking, which he put up somewhere (I'll find out later).

A sub-par Steve Jobs keynote for product announcements, I thought. Not that it mattered. My main take-away was that Apple is doing a great job of hacking the music industry, and is playing a significant role (how intentionally it's not clear) in the mass market shift from a consumer to a producer culture.

What will happen when all of us can be the first sources of music and movies as well as journals and books? A bigger, freer and far more interesting marketplace, is what.

The Iraqi election is only a little more than three weeks off, but for Iraqi civilians and American soldiers, that's got to seem like an eternity. In the last two days, four suicide bombers and multiple guerilla attacks have killed 33 Iraqi policemen, civilians, and government officials. Six American soldiers died on Tuesday alone. The mounting carnage has led to yet another round of questioning as to whether holding an election on the 30th would be feasible, much less advisable. On Tuesday, Iraq's interim president, Ghazi Yawar, suggested that "it will be a tough call to hold the election," and suggested the U.N. should weigh in on whether Iraq's ready for an election.
