A new patch for the Windows version of Halo -- published by Microsoft -- was recently distributed that corrected security issues in online play. Unfortunately, that update prevented users of the Mac version -- published by Destineer studio MacSoft -- from playing on updated Halo servers on the Internet. That issue has been corrected in a new Mac update (v1.053) released Friday. The update also adds support for vertex and pixel shading graphics effects produced by the Nvidia 6800 Ultra video card available as a build-to-order option on Power Mac G5 systems.

Destineer Studios subsidiary MacSoft on Wednesday released an update to Unreal Tournament 2003, their popular first-person shooter. The patch -- version 2225.1, according to its read me file -- adds a variety of enhancements, including performance improvements. Ryan Gordon, the game's Mac developer, claims that performance improvements of 25 percent or more compared to the retail version are typical, thanks to optimizations, lots of new Altivec (or Velocity Engine) code, and a completely rewritten sound subsystem. Single CPU systems get the most improvement out of this version, according to the developer notes.

In the trial version, gamers can choose between four nations: the Persians from the expansion pack, and three others from the original game. Players will be able to play through the tutorial and then get a taste of the Alexander the Great campaign, one of four historical campaigns in the retail version. Gamers will also be able to try their hand on the battlefield on one of three different random map types. This stand-alone trial version does not require gamers to own the original retail version of Rise of Nations.

Microsoft server crash nearly causes
800-plane pile-up
09/22/2004 10:43 PM
For three hours last week 800 airplanes were left flying in the air with no way to contact air traffic control. This serious problem was a combination of human error and a 'design glitch' in Microsoft’s Windows 2000 server.

According to the Los Angeles Times, "Microsoft's software contained an internal clock designed to shut the system down after 49.7 days to prevent it from becoming overloaded with data." In order to avoid this automatic shutdown, technicians at the airport are required to restart the servers manually (every 30 days), and as you can guess last week one of the technicians messed up. Even after all that the airports software analysts still say such a feature is preferable over others to prevent an overloaded system, as an overloaded system might very well give controllers wrong information about flights.

No system is prefect, but I would have thought that the airline industry would have been a lot better prepared. Still you have to give credit where credit is due, and Laura Brown a FAA spokeswoman said that "the agency plans to install a system that would issue a warning well before shutdown." Surely this Windows server feature could have been disabled, and if not is it really Microsoft’s fault for someone else's choice to keep it enabled? I say no (assuming it could be disabled), because there are other alternatives out there and if you're running something this major on Windows 2000 servers you're kind of asking for it. Luckily no one was harmed from this incident, and that gives us another chance. A chance that I'm sure won't be wasted.
