The Crescent Girls School in Singapore is bringing their students into a new era of technology with Tablet PCs. I think this is awesome and I wish that more schools had the resources to make this happen. To me, this is the start of a commitment by the Crescent Girls School to empower their students with knowledge and computer skills that will serve them well into adulthood….

BoingBoing reader Brian says,
Xeni's mention of brick cell phones reminded me of this interesting museum in Paderborn Germany, called the Heinz Nixdorf Museum. The museum is based on the history of computing; and contains all sorts of wonderful classic machines, crank/gear operated calculation engines, typewriters and early keyboards, data processing "stations", minicomputers, mobile phones, personal computers (incl an Apple LISA, remember that!?), etc etc! It's a fascinating visit in person, and the museum website has some glimpses of the exhibits as well as some interesting text on the history of technology and computing.

Computers Correlate To Pre-School
Development

Computers Correlate To Pre-School
Development
06/07/2004 04:28 AM
A serious research journal article suggests that 3-5 year old kids who use computers tend to develop better learning skills than those who don't use computers. But the frequency of computer use didn't seem to be related to learning development, and "computer use" activities weren't well-defined. So at best, the correlation between computer use and development exists, but no causation. And interestingly, there was no correlation between video games and cognitive development or gross motor skills. So computers don't make kids smarter automatically. No big surprise: computers are just tools that can be put to use in ways that could improve learning. The same could be said of pencils and books.

Girls Vs. Boys: Girls Are Winning

Girls Vs. Boys: Girls Are Winning 09/07/2004 10:13 AM

This article in The Observer about the upcoming trend of girl gadgets happens to interview our buddies over at Shiny Shiny, which couldn't be a better choice, really. And by 'upcoming' I mean 'already eclipsed male spending,' at least in the US, with 14 percent more money being dropped last year by women than men.

Women are not so interested in how many megabytes it has, nor indeed whether it looks nice, just: "How well does it work?"

It's only when I buy something that ends up really sucking and languishing in the corner do I ever get the stern eye, which is how it should be.

I read lots of posts down into May. Didn't see one. What this says to me, you being the ultimate fair and balanced blogger, and that is said sincerely, is that we women are just not flying above the blog noise radar these days. This isn't so much a comment to you, David, but more to me, reinforcing what...

Daddy's Little Girls?

Daddy's Little Girls? 01/07/2004 01:58 PM
Laura's Girls Jenna and Barbara have not campaigned or reined in their adolescent rebellions. They have not appeared engaged in any of the pressing issues their generation will inherit, nor shown empathy for the struggles facing their mother and their father, the president of the United States. They have not treated with respect their Secret Service details, those highly trained men and women who literally would take a bullet for them. They don't show their faces at the White House often. So far, they have shown little inclination to embrace the life of public service modeled by their parents, uncle and grandparents. They are girls born rich, blessed with intelligence, good looks, trust funds, loving parents, boundless opportunities, freedom from many of life's daily vexing challenges. Yet they persist in seeing themselves as victims of daddy's job. In this attitude, they have been subtly encouraged by their mother.
