There's a remake of Logan's Run (1976) in the works. From the plot outline at IMDB it'd appear that in 2005 you are too old when you are 21 rather than 30 as it was in 1976. I'm not sure what it means, but it doesn't seem like a good thing. Let the kids be kids already. The twenty-somethings too, please. Lucas Arts makes a Make-A-Wish
kids-wiith-leukemia game
06/29/2004 03:40 PM
A kid with leukemia worked with the Make A Wish foundation and Lucas Arts to produce a leukemia-themed kids-game.
The game he created is about fighting cancer, and it reflects Ben's own battle with leukemia. It takes place inside the body, on a playfield of mutating cells. The hero, a boy on a hovering skateboard, uses high-tech weapons to destroy these cells by collecting the seven shields that protect against common side effects of chemotherapy.

It's not easy to get the shields -- they're in the hands of monsters that have to be zapped. FireMonster guards the fever shield and hurls molten lava. VampMonster guards the bleeding shield and sends out vampire bats. Robarf guards the vomit shield "with big smelly green globs." And QBall, guardian of the hair-loss shield, shoots out billiard balls.

Kids online

Kids online 06/17/2005 04:53 PM

Today, I set up a new computer for the kids. I took the new 2.8Ghz Celeron box that had been serving as my Linux file-server and swapped it with the old 450Mhz P3 box that the kids were using. I was a little surprised how easy it was to make the switch. I just took the hard-drive out of the Celeron and put it in the P3 and Linux came right back up.

I set up Windows XP Home on the Celeron box and installed the important software (Warcraft and SimCity 3000) for the kids. I would have preferred something other than Windows, but we have quite an investment in games and educational software for Windows.

I also added a wireless adapter. So now, for the first time, the kids computer is on-line. I didn't setup any parental controls or filtering software and I'm not really sure what to do about "internet safety." The boys are 7 and 8 and I'm pretty sure they aren't going to go looking for trouble quite yet, but I am a little worried that Google will send them to a site of ill-repute or some horrible porn-spam message will land in their inbox. If you've got kids around that age on-line, I'd love to hear what you do to protect them from porn-spam and other internet threats.

Easy For Kids To Buy Alcohol Online

Easy For Kids To Buy Alcohol Online 06/09/2004 01:16 AM
For years, one of the worries about offering wine and other alcohol online for sale was that it would make it easier for kids to get alcohol. However, the various e-commerce sites that sold alcohol all claimed they had strict procedures to stop it from happening. A quick test by Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly and some college kids put that theory to the test and discovered it was quite easy for underage people to get alcohol online - and some fairly well-known companies may take the fall. The various sites did little to confirm the age of a buyer, and delivery companies FedEx, UPS and DHL often ignored required procedures that the boxes be signed for by someone over 21. In some cases, they even just left the boxes in front of a door without ever getting a signature - even if the box made it clear that a signature by someone over 21 was required.

Java is Mature

Java is Mature 01/18/2004 12:23 AM

Java is a mature proven language for non-GUI applications.  What it means is that it does what you expect it to and there is a large body of open source software you can leverage.  Carlos E. Perez's enumeration of Open Source Web Crawlers Written in Java is a good example.

C# and .NET, on the other hand, has a long way to go still and there is no easy to extend IDE like Eclipse for developers to rally around.  Working with .NET at this point is like working in a new town destined to grow, maybe like Chicago was around 1840.  As for my involvement with .NET, I enjoy the rough life.

A More Mature Microsoft

A More Mature Microsoft 07/23/2004 01:08 AM
Microsoft's surprise announcement Tuesday that it would share about $75 billion with stockholders over four years has investors and analysts wondering if the world's largest software company is still a growth company. If it is, they want to know what's going to drive that future growth, at a time when the PC market where its Windows and Office products dominate has been slowing, and a major new release of Windows, called Longhorn, is widely seen as delayed until 2007.
