Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
05/21/2004 02:35 AMBack in 2002 there was a tremendous amount of hype when Bridgeville,
the small (mostly deserted) California town was
put up
for sale on eBay. It eventually sold in an auction for $1.8
million - and got a tremendous amount of press attention. The only
problem: the $1.8 million bid was a hoax. A whole year went by and
the owners of the "town" sheepishly admitted that
the
buyer (and his money) never showed up. Now, however, the town has
been sold again -
but not on eBay, and back down at its original asking
price of $700,000. Even with the failure of the actual sale to go
through, though, people still remember that you can "sell a town on
eBay," contributing to the
use of
eBay as a PR platform beyond just its ability to match buyers and
sellers.

again, this time because the most recent California election (and
Terminator references aren't really appropriate -- it seems more like
something out of a Phillip K. Dick novel) that used machines whose
software wasn't certified by the state elections board. (Most, but not
all, of the machines met the federal standards, but that doesn't
really matter as it wasn't a federal election. The state wins here)
Including LA county, which last I heard has just a few people living
in it. LA's machines were neither state...

Looks like a minority liberal
government for Canada. The entire process will have been completed

neighbours?

01/26/2004 10:14 AMI live in the 12th Congressional District in California. We're a
pretty sensible (you might call us liberal) bunch. Over 80% oppose the
war. Almost 70% oppose the "Patriot Act."
Yet our Congressman -- a wonderful and amazing figure, Tom Lantos --
doesn't vote the way his district thinks. He has supported the war. He
has supported the Patriot Act.
I haven't done this before, and I'm not going to do this much again,
but this gap between who we are and how we are represented has led me
to help Congressman Lantos' opponent -- Ro Khanna. Ro's a bright,
young, committed Democrat, committed to representing the views of his
district.
He's got a
blog. And a
friend and I are going to have a party for him at my house on February
9. If you'd like to come, send an

Canada
considers electoral reform. The
Law Commission of Canada
just released a
report that recomended a
Mixed
Member Proportional system much like that one that
New Zealand
recently adopted.
Along with the steps being taken at the federal level, the provinces
are at various stages in the process. The government in Quebec has
proposed a similar MMP system for the province, a
commission
in PEI recomended the same system, BC has convened a
Citizens Assembly,
Ontario now has a
Democrati

considering changes as well.

I got two turntables and a right to vote
I got two turntables and a right to vote
06/28/2004 12:19 AMMy DJ buddy Michael Donaldson, aka
Q-Burns Abstract
Message, pauses his world tour for
a show in L.A.
this Wednesday -- catch it! -- and shares word on a project he's
organizing with fellow turntablists and fans thereof:
As you know I'm politically concerned... I've been trying to figure
out how, in my pseudo-lofty position of DJ dude, I can make some
difference. After much thought, I've come up with an idea.
I've collaborated with my friend Laurin Fedora to come up with a
t-shirt design -- basically the word "VOTE!" in a replicated stencil.
I'm having a number of these shirts made in different color
combinations and then will wear one at each of my US DJ gigs from
August until the election. I will also have photos of myself wearing a
shirt on my web site (along with a concept explanation) and in any
pictures that are used for magazines/flyers/etc.
The idea is this: I know that the age demographic that I am mainly
playing to (people in their 20's) are traditionally the ones that do
not vote. This is a shame as the actions of the current administration
will resonate strongly in their futures. I don't know if wearing a
t-shirt with this design at my gigs will inspire any of these
potential voters, but I can hope and have some optimism. Perhaps
seeing a DJ in the supposedly apolitical world of dance music caring
enough to send a message will inspire a few people.... I wanted to
keep the message non-partisan... the simple message of 'VOTE!' also
states my feelings accurately: if more of us voted, then maybe we will
find more candidates who truly represent us.
I'm wondering if you'd like a piece of the action. Laurin is offering
to make more of these shirts. Would you like one (or more than one in
different colors)? (...) Laurin has donated his time to help me with
this. I'm paying for the materials for the shirts that he's making for
me. If you'd like a shirt or shirts, I would need you to pay for the
cost of the materials as well. It's not much ... just the price of the
shirt and an extra buck for the ink and screening. Let me know as
soon as possible if you'd be interested in this as Laurin wants to
screen a bunch in the next day or two.
If you're interested, e-mail Mr. Q-Burns at this
Link.
Send name, e-mail address, shirt size, and color preference -- someone
will respond with cost, payment, and shipping details.

For the love of God, please vote
09/07/2004 01:38 AMI've never been a spectacular history student, but I did enjoy a
civics course during my senior year of high school. After learning the
basics of our gov't, I counted the days until I turned 18 and could
register to vote. I happily voted in local races that first November
and have voted every chance I've gotten since then. Back when Clinton
was running for his first presidency, I recall getting into arguments
with folks, insisting that every young person was like me, and I
predicted 50% of the youth would vote (I can't remember the exact
numbers, but I'm pretty sure I was way off).
Of course, back then, you had to look up the local registrar, call
them, then cut classes or work to show up and fill out the
registration paperwork. These days you can register from the comfort
of your keyboard, at any time of the day or night.
If you're not currently registered to vote, I don't know what
perfect phrase I can add here to get you involved. Personally, I feel
it's the backbone of our nation and without anyone voting, democracy
breaks down. Every year I read my little voter info packets that come
in the mail, I do some research online, and I vote after weighing the
options. It doesn't matter if I'm pleased with my representitives or
not, I vote every chance I get.
The last few elections have had abysmal turnouts and when the
voting for a single week's American Idol approached the number of
folks that voted in the last presidential election, I knew something
had to be done to coax more folks into it. This year, please take
advantage of your right to vote. It's one of your only chances to
participate in this democracy.
The guys behind HotOrNot are upping the ante and giving away
$100,000 to someone that registers to vote at their
site (and if you win off that link, I get $100k too). I'm amazed
Jim and James are ponying up the dough, but I hope it has an effect
and gets more people involved and voting.
So if you're not registered, please, for the love of God, Country,
and (in this case) Money, register to vote already!
