Alcoholism = stepping stone to success

Alcoholism = stepping stone to success
(plus why we must all move to
Switzerland)
03/17/2005 03:24 AM

This article on the founder of IKEA reveals some interesting tidbits...

  • one can move to Switzerland and negotiate a fixed income tax rate related to the value of one's house
  • Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, is richer than Bill Gates now, partly because of the slide of the dollar and partly because Billg has been giving money away; the 77-year-old guy is worth roughly $50 billion
  • like our local hero George W., Mr. Kamprad has had trouble with alcoholism (perhaps we need to encourage young people to drink more?)

Alcohol is supposed to be so bad for brain cells, productivity, etc.  How can we explain the fact that so many hypersuccessful people are or were alcoholics?

A few days ahead of the first presidential debate, Ted Kennedy will give another one of his fiery speeches today condemning Bush for his foreign policy failures -- this time charging that the Bush administration has made us more vulnerable to a "nuclear 9/11" for not rebuilding Iraq, not shutting down al-Qaida and fueling the insurgency in Iraq.

Almost no details available on this, but apparently Tom Siebel has announced plans to leave the company that carries his name. He'll remain chairman, but in a non-executive role. Siebel, the company, has struggled over the last few years to figure out how to remain relevant in the internet age. Still, Siebel's former boss, Larry Ellison is probably enjoying the news that he was able to outlast his former protege.

Gardner Dozois stepping down from
Asimov's

Gardner Dozois stepping down from
Asimov's
04/21/2004 02:08 AM
Gardner Dozois, the long-sitting editor of Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, is stepping down to pursue personal writing projects. Gardner's won the Hugo for best editor 14 times, making him one of the award-winningest editors in the history of the field, and the stories in Asimov's are stunningly well-represented at every year's Nebula and Hugo awards. Dozois popularized the term "cyberpunk" and was a midwife for the literary movement. Gardner's also the first editor to have bought a story from me for a pro market, and the first Year's Best editor to buy a reprint from me, for his definitive, astonishing, long running Year's Best Sceince Fiction anthologies.

Sheila Williams -- currently Managing Editor -- is stepping into Gardner's position, which is itself exciting news: Sheila was a real protege of Asimov's, a friend of his who has been with the magazine even longer than Gardner has. Sheila's always been the "business" editor at Asimov's, the one who handles the logistics and keeps track of who's where and working on what. She knows the Asimov's stable as well as anyone and is herself a shrewd and astute editor.

But the biggest news here is that Gardner is going to go back to work on his own fiction. When I entered the field, all I knew about Gardner was that he was the magazine editor to sell to, but gradually, I discovered that Gardner had once been considered the writer to watch in the field, a talented and lively prose stylist whose output had all but stopped when he took over the berth at Asimov's and began editing his fantastic Year's Best anthologies.

So the field has lost one of its best editors, but it's gained back one of its best writers. That's pretty cool. Link (Thanks, Vera!)

The Stone Supercomputer

The Stone Supercomputer 12/24/2004 12:57 PM

The Stone SouperComputer: Who says your cluster has to be expensive? When it was running, this cluster at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory had 133 nodes in it, most 486s with 32MB RAM and 10 MB/s Ethernet cards.

While our first Beowulf-style parallel computer isn't built out of the most impressive hardware, we got tired of fighting for funding and went ahead with what we could find. Much like the classic Tale of Stone Soup, many individuals contributed to the existing machine*. Because of a complete lack of funding, we used surplus personal computers donated by individuals from ORNL, the Procurement Dept., Y-12, and K-25, to build a parallel computer system which uses public domain compilers and message passing libraries. This system was built at literally no cost.

This was back in the late 90s, so 66MHz wasn't that slow. Still, pretty darn slow.

URLs Set in Stone

URLs Set in Stone 01/05/2005 01:19 AM

I've often wondered whether or not you should change blog posts once they're published. While I often do just because I'm anal, part of me thinks that a blog post is a historical record and should be frozen in time.

It's sort of that way for the titles of posts on Gadgetopia since they're used for the URL. For instance, I screwed up the title of this post (it should be "ALT Attributes," not "ALT tags"), but I can't change it because that would change the URL. I'd have to put in a redirect because it gets a lot of traffic.

As annoying as it is on the surface, there's something...pure in this that I like. The title of this entry is frozen in time. It is how it was originally published. Just like a newspaper publisher can't take something back once it hits the newstand, I can't change this title.

This get me to thinking that it would be an interesting...expirement, to MD5 has hthe entire body of an entry and use the result as the URL. This means that you couldn't change one single character of the entry after it was published without completely changing the URL.

I find this idea intriguing. Not enough to try it, mind you, but stil interesting to consider.
