Is Nano- The Next Dot-Com?

Is Nano- The Next Dot-Com? 05/27/2004 03:22 PM
Considering there are at least 130 private companies with some sort of "nano" in their name (if not their business), investment banks are starting to create "nano" indexes to track the sector and ris k overhyping the nanotechnology sector like dot-coms during the Internet boom. The differences this time around are that investors may be more cautious now and that well-established, public companies are already investing in nanotechnology to head-off the little start-ups. So the nano-bust might be, no pun intended, smaller.

Toshiba develops rechargeable battery that can charge in o ne minute. The battery< /a> can achieve 80 percent nominal charge 60 times faster than conventional Lithium Ion batteries, and only loses 1 percent of its life cycle every 1,000 charges. In comparison to any other type of battery in existence, that is amazing.

What is the Creative Zen Nano Plus?

What is the Creative Zen Nano Plus? 04/13/2005 08:57 AM

Mike writes:

I was skimming the stores in search of a good mp3 player deal [I lost all my friends trying to get one for free] and I stumbled upon something called a Zen Nano Plus. It's a 1 GB player, and it comes in the usual array of candy colors we've come to expect from Creative.
Some Google searching reveals only prices, capacity, and colors, and it looks a lot an iPod shuffle fighter, to me—512MB and 1GB sizes for $100ish and $150ish, respectively.

But the real question is: will it have a screen?

Recently opened at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art: "nano," a cool art/science exhibit for geeks of all ages:
nano [is] an exhibition that merges the arts and the atom by presenting the world of nanoscience through a participatory aesthetic experience. The exhibition, a collaboration between LACMALab and a UCLA team of nanoscience, media arts, and humanities experts, is free to the public and runs through September 6, 2004 in LACMA's Boone Children's Gallery.

This groundbreaking project provides a greater understanding of how art, science, culture, and technology influence each other. The exhibition addresses sophisticated subject matter that is especially relevant for the next generation. Modular, experiential spaces using embedded computing technologies engage all of the senses to provoke a broader understanding of nanoscience and its cultural ramifications. The various components of nano are designed to immerse the visitor in the radical shifts of scale and sensory modes that characterize nanoscience, which works on the scale of a billionth of a meter. Participants can feel what it is like to manipulate atoms one by one and experience nano-scale structures by engaging in art-making activities.

Screenshot GNU nano (Nano's ANOther editor, or Not ANOther editor) is an enhanced clone of the Pico text editor.
Changes:
This release mostly contains bugfixes for the new code in 1.3.6. nano builds with debug support again. Going into help at the "Read File" prompt no longer kicks you out of the prompt after you exit help. Paragraph searching no longer skips over some one-line paragraphs. The titlebar no longer cuts off some UTF-8 strings too early. The help text is now wrapped as it was in nano 1.2.x, taking UTF-8 support into account. New features include a configure option to explicitly turn detection of UTF-8 support on or off and sample regexes for C++ as well as C.

Nano-scale Cyborgs Created in Lab

Nano-scale Cyborgs Created in Lab 02/01/2005 10:05 PM
According to a BBC News article, nanotechnology researchers at the University of California's NanoSystems Institute in Los Angeles have created tiny robots powered by living muscle tissue. The scientists took heart cells from rats and combined them with tiny silicon and plastic "skeletons". The muscle cells attach to the specific points on the hardware and begin to grow and function as muscles, moving the two-footed cyborgs around. Are the tiny robots alive? Professor Carlo Montemagno, one of the researchers, says, "They're absolutely alive. I mean the cells actually grow, multiply and assemble - they form the structure themselves. So the device is alive." For more, see also an older article in New Scientist.
