Oh, Those Pesky Numbers

Oh, Those Pesky Numbers 03/28/2005 08:19 AM
Numbers are important. While computers are good with numbers, humans still seem to have problems with them, and despite our use of computers, it seems we're still not able to come up with foolproof ways to stop people from making stupid numerical mistakes. It appears that some fairly costly number typos are coming back to haunt some organizations. While some numerical errors just lead to humor ous results, a misprint of a winning lottery ticket in a NY newspaper and the incorrect voting phone number flashing on the screen on a recent American Idol are causing all sorts of problems -- and making some wonder how such mistakes can happen. The answer, it appears, is that they always happen. We're just not that good with number and tend to mess them up. And either because of, or in spite of, the growing use of computers, it often seems that numbers are more common than ever in our lives -- and yet they're just as easy to mess up. As the article notes, though, as we enter tax season, it pays to remember that your friendly IRS agent isn't always so forgiving.

Those pesky 527's

Those pesky 527's 08/27/2004 01:37 PM
W is now denouncing 527 groups (some background here, here, here, and here) so that he'll get headlines that sound as if he's denounced the Swiftboat Veterans for Big Lies. And, of course, it's working. But I find myself really confused about what to do about those 527s. On the one hand, they are the way big money is getting around campaign finance limitations. They give too much power to people and companies with money. On the other, how do you stop them from advertising (a proposal the Reform Party backs) without infringing on free speech? If I want to...

StarOffice takes on Microsoft

StarOffice takes on Microsoft 02/19/2004 11:37 AM
With the release of the new StarOffice 7 for Sun Solaris last month, Sun Microsystems noticeably chipped away at Microsoft’s Office juggernaut. One of the ways StarOffice--and it’s freeware cousin OpenOffice--is accomplishing its beachhead of 40 million desktops worldwide is through the PDF and Flash export capability found in both the commercial ($49.95) and free versions.

Microsoft Takes Aim At Intuit Again

Microsoft Takes Aim At Intuit Again 12/06/2003 04:30 PM
Microsoft is hoping Magellan can take it where Microsoft Profit and bCentral Finance Manager could not. The destination? Small business accounting, a market dominated by Intuit's QuickBooks.

After several failed attempts, the software giant will once again make a foray into small business accounting with a project code-named Magellan, sources said. Details are sketchy. A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed the code name, and said the company continues to investigate the best ways to serve small businesses, but that it is too early to talk product plans.

Microsoft Takes On MikeRoweSoft

Microsoft Takes On MikeRoweSoft 01/19/2004 01:44 AM
I'm surprised this one hasn't gotten more attention yet (though, it probably will). A kid in Canada named Mike Rowe needed a name for his website design business, and picked the somewhat obvious choice: MikeRoweSoft.com. The legal folks at a company you might have heard of, Microsoft, didn't take too kindly to that, and sent the typical threatening legal letter. They offered Mr. Rowe a whopping $10 for the domain. He wrote back saying $10,000 seemed more appropriate - and now Microsoft is accusing him of holding the domain hostage to try to get money out of Microsoft. I read the story a few times before I actually believed it. Even the name of the Microsoft law firm involved in this case (Smart & Biggar) made me wonder if it's all a big hoax - but it all seems real enough. Before the legal beagles chip in with the point that Microsoft needs to do this to protect their trademark, I'll respond by saying that this should be a perfect example of why that rule doesn't make much sense. How many people are actually going to confuse MikeRoweSoft with Microsoft? If anything, Mr. Rowe is going to have more trouble getting people to remember what his domain name is - as he's going to need to spell it out to everyone. However, as a publicity stunt for Mr. Rowe's web design business, this is probably going to help him out quite a bit.
