Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
01/17/2004 10:47 PM
The big discussion that I've been having with a few different people over the last few weeks is whether or not Google would get into the email business - and, if so, how? To me, it seems like an obvious extension of their technology and business model - but not everyone agrees. However, the rumors are getting louder and louder that Google is developing an email product. The question is whether they'll be offering an entire "Google Email" system, or if they're just working on a version of their AdSense offering that would work within email (generating contextual ads based on the content of the email). Some people I've spoken to about it thought that people would freak out if they thought Google was reading their email to do its contextualization magic - which could be true. The question is how many people will freak out - and will plenty of others be more than willing to welcome the Google contextualization engine into their inbox, in exchange for the ability to actually "Google your email"? Many people always seem to want the ability to better search through their own email. I could see a certain willingness from many people to let Google place ads in their email in exchange for the ability to better search through all the email. If Google could figure out a good anti-spam solution, as well, it could be a real hit.

For years, SMTP server software was used to send and receive e-mail communications. These older servers, usually freeware, have created many delivery challenges. Most of the time, marketers, CEO’s and even CMO’s are completely unaware of these issues. The owners of ActivSoftware, in central New York, introduced a worldwide challenge to prove their software system (http://www.activsoftware.com/xms) is one of a kind in the email industry. Email Postage Company Says People Want
Email Postage Stamps
04/21/2004 12:54 PM
Is it really any surprise that an email postage company has done a survey saying that p eople want email postage stamps as a way of cutting back spam. In the past, every survey that has asked people about email postage has generally come out the opposite way. However, when you ask the question in a leading way, such as: "Is it a good idea to shift the cost of e-mail from the ISPs to those who send mass e-mail?" who's actually going to say no? Of course, people want to "shift the cost," but that's not the same as saying they want to deal with email postage stamps.

Email is like TiVo for chat.

I’m not sure why I felt like writing that sentence, except that I’m a big fan of the “blank is like TiVo for blank” comparisons. At some point, everything is either like TiVo or like a thing being TiVo’d.

I sometimes enjoy making up absurd comparisons. Clouds are like TiVo for rain. Soup is like TiVo for vegetables. That kind of thing.

Must We Pay For Email?

Must We Pay For Email? 12/16/2003 12:32 PM
One of the popular suggestions for stopping spam is to start charging for every email sent. The latest proponent of this plan are the folks at Forrester Research. They make the same mistakes most people do in proposing such a solution - suggesting that the benefits will far outweigh the costs. They suggest that most firms will actually save money because they won't have to pay for spam filters any more. They also suggest that email will become more useful - since emails won't get ignored and/or lost so much. However, there are also a ton of unintended consequences that they ignore. First, revamping the entire infrastructure of email for the sake of tracking and charging will be incredibly expensive. Then, maintaining that infrastructure will raise all sorts of other issues. They will need to track usage, charges, do the billing, and make sure people pay. These are not inexpensive things. It also acts to discourage use. Putting any sort of "per-use" tax will discourage legitimate uses of email just as much as the bad uses of email. Mailing lists would become nearly impossible to maintain, and because email would need to be tracked to specific people, anonymous email would become impossible. The basic idea of charging to stamp out spammers may sound nice, but there are unintended consequences that suggest it wouldn't be a very useful solution, while also placing the cost burden on all of the legitimate users of email.

Why Does The FBI Let Someone Else Manage
Their Email?
02/05/2005 09:48 PM
Just a month or so after it was revealed that a hacker had access to Secre t Service emails because at least one agent was doing email from a T-Mobile Sidekick, comes the news that the FBI is shutting down an email system for fear that it's been hacked into. Of course, you shouldn't worry, because this isn't there really important email system, this one is just for... um... show. That is, it's the email system they use when they communicate with the riffraff, rather than for all their secret stuff that they keep separate. Of course, it still makes you wonder why the FBI would contract out management of their email system (even the one for communicating with lowly outsiders) to an outside company? You would think that's the sort of thing that they might want to have control over themselves.

Sony HandyCam DCR-DVD301

Sony HandyCam DCR-DVD301 09/08/2004 07:22 AM

sony_inch.jpg imageDespite the ever-present push towards "smaller," there's nothing small about Sony's new "DCR-DVD301" DVD Handycam's screen. At first glance, it appears to be a standard DVD Handycam - same 1.4GB 8cm DVD writing, and more or less the same specifications - but when you look twice, you realize this new unit is equipped with a 3.5" LCD. Indeed, Sony has added a full inch in at least one area, which is more than anyone can ask, really.

"With great LCD screens comes great price," my uncle once said, and apparently he was right on target: you'll pay nearly $1,100 for this camera, presuming it gets released in America for a similar price as the Japanese market.

sony_pc350.jpg imageSony's new DCR-PC350 MiniDV Handycam jams a 3.31-megapixel CCD into a compact shell that weighs less than a pound. Each unit comes with a Handycam Station, a charging dock that connects to a TV or PC via S-Video, USB, or FireWire (i.LINK), to copy over data or display images or video straight from the camera. A 2.5-inch touchscreen LCD augments the rest of the controls, and a Memory Stick PRO Duo slot allows for a quick toss-in of additional storage (just for photos, not video, I would think). Small, light, and high-quality -- no complaints here (although I wouldn't mind a hard drive inside, too, if I'm free to wish).

Should be available in September for $1,300, "just in time for the holidays." I had no idea Sony was so concerned about Rosh Hashanah. CyberShabot Shalom!

Of course, it's of great interest to those in the U.K. but it's also of interest to the rest of you either because Novell may already (or soon will) have something similar, or because you could use it as ammunition to encourage an equivalent program in your country.

02/01/2005 09:09 PM

pspupdater.jpg imageThe Register is reporting that Sony will be launching a new music service specifically for its PSP portable gaming system. The new download service is supposed to be in place by March here to coincide with the launch of Sony's player. Tony Smith speculates that the service, once in place, could just as easily be used to push video content down to the device, which doesn't have a hard drive, but can accept flash MemoryStick in 1-2GB sizes—plenty big for a couple of movies.

I think if Sony's got a shot at the iPod, the PSP is it—it can do almost everything you'd want to do while on the road, including productivity stuff (if they release a keyboard).

Connect is based on a downloadable client , offers more than five hundred thousand songs, and offers now-traditional pricing: ninety-nine cents per song, with a subscription option. Additionally, Connect is appealing to indepedent labels for more content. As with iTunes, a digital rights management ( DRM ) application, MagicGate DRM , restricts sharing of downloaded music files. Connect's file format, ATRAC 3 , is not compatible with the popular iPod portable music player. The desktop client is available for Windows machines only.

Sony_DSC-T3.jpg imageGott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar 4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a 7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.

The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the day.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AM
Has anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does, Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over a month after Sony announced plans to build out retail stores more for advertising than for sales, Samsung plans to do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for advertising that they won't sell you anything at the store. It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage isn't enough to scare them off.
