AP - The video game industry seems to delight in pushing the envelope — and the bounds of good taste — with ever-gorier content. That has put it under renewed attack from legislators and activists who claim some titles must be kept out of kids' hands, though courts have repeatedly granted games First Amendment protections.

The reported site also included links to pages on Amazon.com where the games the governor believes are offensive can be easily purchased. Kinda serves the Governor office right for not registering the .com when registering the .org." It's amazing how many times this sort of thing happens, where someone promotes a .com instead of a .org -- but this time, whoever bought the .com made sure that it was very much opposed to the plan.

While some have been quick to link all sorts of violent video games to crimes committed by teens, there's plenty to suggest they' re not the problem. To make a similar point, someone has noticed that a number of recent mass murderers were religious church-goers, yet no one is blaming church for their killing sprees -- nor should they. It's easy to show a correlation. It's much more difficult to prove that one thing really resulted in the other.

New Zealand Bans Violent Video Game 12/12/2003 02:02 PM
In one single action, New Zealand's "Chief Censor" has just given Rockstar Game's Manhunt more publicity than they probably could have bought. New Zealand is completely banning the game for being too violent. I don't know anything about the game, and it certainly doesn't sound like anything I'd want to play. If New Zealand wants to ban it, that's their issue. My question, though, if the game is so dangerous that no one should dare be allowed to view it, how come the folks at the Censor's office haven't gone crazy shooting up the world? What makes them so special that they can view the game, realize it's "just a game" and continue acting in a civilized way in the real world? How come they think that everyone else in the country doesn't have that ability?

Are Video Games Good For Kids?

Are Video Games Good For Kids? 08/11/2004 05:30 PM
While it does seem that the anti-videogame folks blow the danger of video games way out of proportion, a new festival seems to be going in the other direction by claimin g video games are good for kids. It's such a broad statement that it has to be untrue. Certainly, some video games might be good for kids, in helping them deal with differe nt kinds of challenges, but it hardly seems like random anecdotal evidence (about all that's presented in the article) proves that video gaming is "good." For example, the article includes this sentence: "Dr Judy Robertson, of Edinburgh University, said some children had told her during computer games workshops that playing violent games did not result in violence in real life." Just because some kids say something doesn't necessarily make it true (even if it probably is true). If they really want to show this, wouldn't it make more sense to actually promotes the ways that video games can be helpful to kids, rather than just declaring it so? I'm all for real studies that show the positive impact games have for kids, but hyping up something without substance just makes the arguments seem weak.

Getting Kids To Program Old School Video

04/06/2005 06:48 AM
It seems that every recent story about Atari has been about their attempts (in their modern form -- quite different from the original Atari) to make a killing on the nostalgia market, offering up classic games from years back to today's adults -- either on computers or (increasingly) on mobile phones. However, it appears that many feel the basic concepts of old Atari videogames are still valuable for game designers to learn -- resulting in a competition to design new games for the Atari 2600. Of course, there's one twist: the games needed to be created in 24 hours. While the story is amusing to read, what it really does is remind people that, despite all the amazing graphics found in today's game, a game is still about gameplay at its core -- which many of today's game designers seem to forget.

Ads In Video Games And (Apparently) A
Good PR Staff
04/11/2005 08:49 AM
People have been talking for years about the idea of ads in video games -- and, in fact, they've been showing up more and more. One of the issues, though, was always keeping the ads up-to-date. With that in mind, a few companies have been experimenting with ways to do so. In fact, there were stories last year about companies working on exactly that. So, with that in mind, it's not clear why just about every publication seems to feel the need to talk about a me-too offering that seems to do the same thing. However, the San Jose Merc, News.com, the New York Times, Reuters and plenty of others all seem to be carrying the story. Apparently, this particular firm has a fairly impressive PR team. Most of these articles seem to just be parroting the story that the company wanted released, which doesn't seem particularly interesting at all. They're just adding dynamic ads into video games. That doesn't seem particularly special. What would be interesting is whether or not anyone actually pays attention to these ads, or if they're a complete waste -- but only the NY Times piece seems to even question that, and they don't go too deeply into it, either.

Cory Doctorow: Last night, the copyright debate of the young century was held when EFF Senior IP Attorney Fred von Lohmann and Siva Vaidhyanathan, author of the great copyfight book "The Anarchist in the Library," faced down reps from the RIAA, MPAA, Universal and Napster in a 3+ hour wrangle before an audience at Cornell University. Now the video is online -- well, it's available as a crappy, dropout-prone Real stream. No doubt there will shortly be ripped audio and video available. Real Video Link (via Copyfight)

Cory Doctorow: Last week's Cornell Debate between EFF senior IP attorney Fred Von Lohmann, copyfighting media studies prof Siva Vaidhyanathan, and counsel from the MPAA, RIAA, Napster 2 and Universal was astounding, the most engrossing three hours of video I've watched all month.

Unfortunately and inexplicably, this was only available as a crappy, dropout-prone Real stream from Cornell, which meant you couldn't load the audio onto your iPod or download the video to show your friends later.

Now someone's converted the video to something else (not sure what) and posted a .torrent, packaged with soemthing called "Matroska" that seems like a good way to add bookmarks and such to video (I'd be interested in knowing whether this packaging presents any barrier to someone who simply wants to download the video and watch it in her player of choice). There's also an Ogg of the audio available (I'd love to see this converted to MP3 for iPod users and posted as a Torrent!). Video Torrent Link, Ogg Torrent Link

Wishing For A Video Game To Explain
Cancer To Kids
06/28/2004 05:22 AM
Every time you hear about the Make-A-Wish Foundation, it usually involves a kid who wants to meet an athlete, musician or movie star. Those requests probably aren't all that difficult to fulfill. However, when Ben Duskin, a child with Leukemia, decided he wanted a video game that could teach children what cancer was all about, it turned out to be a fairly difficult request. Eventually, though, the Foundation tracked down a game programmer from LucasArts who worked with Ben to create the game he wanted and which he hopes will help other kids understand what they're going through. They're now offering the game as a free download off their website. It doesn't sound like the most sophisticated game, but obviously that's not the point.
