AP - It happens to all of us: There's a word on the tip of our tongues that just ... won't ... emerge, no matter how tightly we squeeze our eyes shut or how fast we drum our fingers as we tilt our heads in contemplation.

compiling fictional encyclopedia
04/15/2005 09:01 PM
Cory Doctorow: Morbus Iff sez, "Ghyll is a Creative Common licensed player-created world per the rules of "Lexicon: an RPG" (think: a fictional wikipedia, constrained by integration, consecutive letter definitions, and cranky scholars that write before 'before scholarly pursuits became professionalized (or possibly after they ceased to be)'). It has reached nearly 30 players, 200 pages of text, an incredibly large timeline, a hundred characters, and a to-scale ASCII map of the known world. Darkly humorous? Possible. Odd? Mmhmmm. All CC? Ayup.

"We're starting Round 2 next month (in essence, starting over again at letter A to further define the world). Notes about the announcement here, as well as links to the timeline, characters, and ASCII map." Link (Thanks, Morbus!)

More Than Seven Words You Can't Say... 01/01/2005 02:58 AM
New Year's Tradition: Banishing Words (yes, I've done this before) L.S.S.U has been making lists since 1976, but after all the censorship battles of the last year, they probably should be using less threatening terminology than "banished". Still, most of the terminology in this Hall of Shame list certainly deserves to be discouraged, derided and degraded.

Of course, Creative Deity Matt Groening does his own annual list of Forbidden Words, and some webhead has developed a cool webtool: The Forbidden Words Flagger.

New words

New words 04/26/2004 01:59 AM
Here's a new addition to the IT dictionary:

laptop ballet: the movements made by a person hurrying to a meeting, when he realizes he does not know where this meeting takes place, and that information is only in the email, but he is too busy or lacking a suitable place to sit down, so he ends up running down the hallway, balancing the laptop with one hand, and using the computer with the other.

Sometimes you also see this being performed with PDAs and cell phones, but these are nowhere as spectacular as the full 3 kg IBM Thinkpad version, performed in a narrow corridor in sync with 20 other people.

Bio Diesel conversion primer

Bio Diesel conversion primer 06/15/2004 10:12 AM
On Kevin Kelly's "Cool Tools" ezine, a primer on Bio Diesel -- fuels made from veggie oil. Roll your own renewable fueling station!
I have been running Bio Diesel in my truck for over a year now. Bio Diesel is basically slightly refined vegetable oil that can run in ANY diesel vehicle with little to no modifications. The vegetable oil used can be virgin, but it is generally recycled from fryers at restaurants. Yes, the exhaust smells like whatever was fried in it. The best part of running Bio Diesel is that no wars need to be fought over it: it's entirely domestic, supports US farming, it's totally renewable, and it cuts almost all aspects of a diesel vehicle's emissions by more than 50-75%. (The exception is NOx which is about the same). You get slightly less mileage and power (5% decrease) from petro-diesel, but your exhaust smells a lot better and its actually easier on your engine.
