Customer support I really hate

Customer support I really hate

Customer support I really hate 03/11/2003 09:44 AM

As far as Internet connectivity goes, I'm not a happy camper these days. My (allegedly) high-speed provider is turning out to be less reliable than an AOL modem connection?but a lot more expensive. Over the last three days, my connection has been going up and down on a continuous basis. ...

We have a Roomba at home to sweet our floor while we're out (it's really noisy). Yes, from iRobot makers of the "next step in unmanned tactical mobile robots". In other words: They are makers of robotic killing machines! Anyway, one of the evil cats ate the power supply some time ago, so it hasn't gotten much use lately. (Her cats, I usually say when they do things like that) I sent them an email through their online email form...

When All The Humans Are Gone From
Customer Support

When All The Humans Are Gone From
Customer Support
12/29/2004 10:35 PM
The NY Times is running an article similar to ones that others have run before, noting how incredibly difficult it is to actually get a human on the phone these days when you need customer support from a company. While many people know the "tricks" such as hitting 0 to get around the painful menus, it looks like some companies are spending more time making it harder for customers to reach humans (rather than, say, actually figuring out ways to help their customers). This means that the "0" trick won't always work -- though, sometimes hitting it three or four times in a row will get you through. Other tricks include hitting the * key in the hopes of getting a company directory. What's still not clear is why companies do this. Most of these automated systems simply keep people on these phone calls for a longer period of time and tend to piss them off. My favorite system so far was a Comcast system that required me to go through twelve menus before I could speak to a human, whose first question to me was "what phone number are you calling from" when in step two or three I had specifically punched in my phone number.

Customer Support That Works From JetBlue

Customer Support That Works From JetBlue 05/07/2004 04:51 AM
We've had so many stories about how awful customer or tech support centers are managed (with the goal of reducing call times, rather than solving customer problems) that I thought it's definitely about time that we had a story about a company that appears to understand how to do customer service right. JetBlue certainly has the reputation for being customer friendly - and my own experience with the airline supports that view (though, I still don't think they're quite as amazing as some people make them out to be). It's fairly well known that their customer support people get to work from home, but now Fast Company has a piece looking at how they manage to keep those work-from-home customer support people feeling like they're a part of the company while empowering them to actually (gasp!) be nice to customers while really solving any issues they might have. It's unfortunate these days that we actually have to single out one of the few company's that "gets it." This follows, by the way, an Inc. article (which appears to use identical templates as Fast Company) last month about how JetBlue's CEO frequently works as a flight attendant on JetBlue flights. He does this for a variety of reasons, including the chance to really speak to his customers, as well as to get to know (and inspire) the flight attendants who fly on his planes. Why can't more companies understand the value of their own customers?

Customer Support Emails? We're Supposed
To Respond To Them?

Customer Support Emails? We're Supposed
To Respond To Them?
01/07/2005 12:10 AM
Who really needs customers< /a> after all? Apparently, plenty of companies online have no problem ignoring them. A new study has found that 15% of companies do not respond to customers' e-mails at all. Another 14% only respond partially, and plenty of others don't respond in a reasonable amount of time. We've seen similar stats before. Of course, what's most interesting is that those other studies have shown that the very same companies respo nd very quickly to sales requests. It certainly seems that some companies have their priorities out of whack. Your customers are the ones who you know are willing to give you money. Shouldn't you treat them in a way that will make them want to give you money again? Maybe the problem is just that there are no humans left in customer support.

Varargs. Or, these days, stdargs. It's how C lets you define functions that take a variable number of arguments. Why do I hate it? Because, even though you're forced to view the argument list opaquely, there's no argument count! That is, the standard says the variable length argument list lives in a magic va_arg thingie, you must use the Magic Functions to get the individual arguments out, and you must have the magic ... signature to note varargs in the function declaration, but... the standard can't be bothered to mandate that an argument count is passed. This seems utterly mad....

Outlook 2003 Sucks Ass. Bigtime. 10/28/2003 11:09 PM
I've had it running for about a week now, and find it very difficult to give it anything beyond a "D+" as a grade. It's noticably slower than Outlook 2000, and (beyond the high-color icons) brings with it ghastly UI changes. Maybe YOU appreciate being able to view the subject line of a message from across the room, but I don't. Maybe YOU think it's wonderful to toggle certain features (lest you care to suffer the unusable alternative), but I don't. IMHO, the only saving grace of Outlook 2003 as a non-Exchange PIM is Search Folders - but that's only because I'm a NewsGator junkie. I'm severely disappointed with this release, and will not recommend it without caveats (as you will discover in one of my future CPU articles). Piss poor job on this one, Microsoft. Someone needs to develop a TweakUI to clean up your mistakes and oversights immediately, and I'll be happy to offer dozens of suggestions....

Hollywood Agents Playing Video Games 12/10/2003 12:43 PM
For years, people have predicted that video games were the "next movies" as they started to grow as the entertainment choice of a new generation. Now, it seems the folks in Hollywood - specifically the agents - have discovered that there's money in games (in fact, more money than in movies). Hollywood agents are pushing over each other to get in good with game makers - and are doing their best to tie in games with movies, and movies with games. The article suggests some of this collaboration between the two industries is because many of the decision makers in Hollywood grew up playing video games and hold them in higher regard than those who never played video games.

Email Flamewars Reach The Office 08/06/2004 12:57 PM
Apparently, some researchers in Australia have just figured out what just about anyone with a job and an email address already knows: email is used for intra-office "warfare." Basically, they've realized that flamewars happen inside the office as well, as the same conditions exist that cause flamewars on mailing lists around the world. The ease of responding too quickly in print, and not thinking about the reactions of those who will receive the message, makes it fairly common.

  • Office 2003 Add-in: Office Web Components

Microsoft Office Web Components are a collection of Component Object Model (COM) controls for publishing spreadsheets, charts, and databases to the Web. They are also used to view these items when published and to view data access pages.
If you have Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003, Microsoft Office Access 2003, and Microsoft Office Excel 2003 installed, Office Web Components allow you to publish interactive data as part of a Web page. Used with Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.01 or later, Office Web Components allow you to view a published control (spreadsheet, chart, or database) on a Web page and to view data access pages.
The Office Web Components tool provides view-only functionality for users who do not have Office 2003 installed. By installing this tool, users can view published components and data access pages on the Web without having to install Office 2003.
