Browsing the Web? Not Anymore 07/09/2004 04:50 PM
I can't remember the last time I actually browsed the Web. You know, just sort of aimlessly following links in the hopes of encountering something unique or interesting. (I'm also glad that idea of calling it "surfing" seems to have become less popular.) Between the few sites I visit daily to get things done, links that come in via e-mail, and the various weblogs and news feeds I guess I'm spending enough time in my browser already. It's a far...

Mozilla is an excellent web browser. You heard it here first, folks. I have been using this browser exclusively for about two months now and I have not been disappointed once. It has the best support for W3C standards, as well as being quicker and lighter then Internet Explorer (results may vary). But I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. The real point of this argument is that the top feature in Mozilla, in my opinion, is tabbed browsing. Observe... As an example of how I use the RSS features of my own web site, when I find an article I want to read from one of the links, I middle-click. Mozilla, under the Preferences area, allows you to set the option to have links open in new "tabs". Therefore, I can view numerous web sites at once, without having that number of windows open. Update: I forgot to mention that Mozilla's side-project Phoenix also supports all the goodies that Mozilla does, as well as tabbed browsing, while weighing in a smaller overall size. Check it out; version 0.4 was released last week. Speaking of reading RSS feeds, this evening while I was reading these feeds I clicked on Simon Willison's feed and lo and behold I saw my web site's name. Thanks to Simon for linking to my page, I appreciate it. I enjoy reading his musings daily. New Look: stonefishspine has put up a new design today. He's been testing new designs for a while and I think I like this one best. Speaking of designs, I dig Zeldman's new digs as well.

No one UI fits all - anymore!

No one UI fits all - anymore! 05/26/2004 11:58 AM
One UI Does Not Fit All.

To see the full-screen trailers of The Incredibles and Alexander, Apple is making you use iTunes, rather than its QuickTime player. (It uses QuickTime for the full screen version of Spider-Man II or Sky Captain.) After you view the trailer with iTunes, you end up at the iTunes store's new trailers section. However, most of the trailers housed there drive you to QuickTime, rather than iTunes, as the media player.

I don't believe that one UI fits all. Neither does Apple, usually. There's good reasons that the UIs for QuickTime, iTunes, Safari, the iPod, and OS X are different, and tuned to the functions and medium they're focused on. A browser is about browsing and searching. It accomodates viewing short media like music clips and trailers via plug-ins just fine. Music lends itself to playlists, sorting by artist, album, or genre, and, when portable, one-thumb scrolling and manipulation. Etc., etc.

The iTunes video experience exposes some flaws of the single UI approach. It's probably just an implementation glitch, but with QuickTime you can skip ahead or back in the trailer; you can't with iTunes. Tivo, who is very good at creating a TV UI, falls flat with its music and photo features. Microsoft's Media Center implementations - both portable and TV screen versions - are similarly challenged, though Microsoft, for once, is not crippling them with too many Windows conventions.

[David Card]

I don't believe that one UI fits all - either.

But this isn't necessarily what I meant.

You're our favorite subscriber!

Seriously. I know we here at Friendster shouldn't play favorites, and our chief operating officer (he's the old guy in the office) told us not to do this, but seriously, you just totally rock. The way you reconnect with old friends. The way you've figured out just how small and interconnected the world really is. The way you discovered people with the same interests as you. We suspect you've even gotten a date out of Friendster, or that if you didn't, you could have if you needed to. Easy. With one of those three suspiciously hot people who keep popping up right above your friends list. For other people, we just use those pictures as cruel, aspirational temptation. But for you, they're totally getable.
We even made Friendster much faster just for you. But hey - don't tell anyone we told you all of this. That old guy in the office will just start lecturing us again and pulling out charts and graphs and PowerPoint displays. He's such a loser.

Thanks,
Your friends at Friendster

Kids Can't Write Anymore, Fear The New
SAT
06/28/2004 09:45 PM
Here's one for all those teachers freakin g out when their students hand in a paper written in "txt". Now, those same kids are blaming current school programs for not teaching them how to write properly. The problem is that the new SAT exam includes a written component -- and they do mean written. Students will be expected to pick up a paper and a pencil for the first time in years and actually jot down the essay answer in their very own chicken scratch. Tragically, many of these kids claim they have been using keyboards and keypads for so long, the idea of writing with a pencil scares them silly. They're afraid their handwriting will be so bad that they'll get a bad score. The schools respond that they still teach good penmanship, and seem to think that the kids are just whining excessively. Of course, considering the rest of the exam has been entirely computerized for years, why not just give the kids a keyboard and let them type their essay responses (or, since the kids these days are so into text messaging -- let them text their essays)?

Owner Override: a proposal to fix
Trusted Computing

Owner Override: a proposal to fix
Trusted Computing
11/15/2003 01:14 PM
My collegaue Seth Schoen has written an audacious article for Linux Journal in which he calls on the architects of "Trusted Computing" [TCPA|TCG|Palladium|NGSCB] systems -- which ostensibly solve some of the Internet's security problems by adding cryptographicallly secured tamper-detection to the hardware of the commodity PC -- to add a feature that he calls "Owner Override."

Trusted Computing proposals have drawn fire as tools for lock-in and other anti-competitive strategies; Seth's Owner Override allows the owner of a computer to override the Trusted Computing security when it is in her own interest.

For example, you could use Owner Override to tell a "lie" to your bank, which insists that you use Microsoft Internet Explorer to access its website, and convince the bank's webserver that your copy of Opera or Safari or Mozilla is really Internet Explorer. This is possible (even routine) today, but in a Trusted Computing universe, it will be impossible, modulo Owner Override.

Fortunately, this problem is fixable. TCG should empower computer owners to override attestations deliberately to defeat policies of which they disapprove. Giving the owner this choice preserves an essential part of the status quo: third parties can never know for sure what's running on your PC. TCG already defines a platform owner concept. The TCG specification also should provide for a facility by which the platform owner, when physically present, can force the TPM chip to generate an attestation as if the Platform Configuration Registers (PCRs) contained values of the owner's choice instead of their actual values.

APIs and a clear user interface for the override mechanism could be specified by an appropriate TCG committee. Only the platform owner should be able to do this; whenever a machine provides an inaccurate attestation, it does so for what its owner considered an appropriate reason. This change would do nothing to undermine the basic security benefits of the TCPA hardware, including those outlined in the Safford article; you still could tell whether your computer had been altered.

FeedDemon Crack

FeedDemon Crack 06/18/2004 09:27 AM

Dave Winer and Evan Williams commented that the people who shout the loudest are often the ones who have no basis for their anger. I'm reminded of this fact by an email I received this morning. Here's a quote:

"Fix your piece of s--- program! I upgraded to FeedDemon 1.10 and it crashes with 'Win32 device error.' Did you even test this s---?"

I've actually received a number of emails (and one forum post) about this bug, but I have no plans to fix it. Why? Because the error message only appears if you upgrade a cracked version of FeedDemon 1.0. This is a deliberate error message that FeedDemon 1.10 displays when it detects that you upgraded from a specific cracked version of FeedDemon 1.0.

That's right, people who use a pirated version of FeedDemon are emailing me for support. It never ceases to amaze me when people not only steal from me, but also expect me to spend my time answering their questions. And more often than not, the email I've received about this problem reads like something a drunk teenager would write.

I've written about piracy befor e and I'm not planning to start another lengthy rant. But I do have a request for those who have justified their use of cracked versions of my work: don't ask for support. I support my family with sales of my software, and my life is affected - dramatically - by the existence of cracks. Please, if you're using a pirated version of my software, don't expect me to help you.

New Bluetooth Crack

New Bluetooth Crack 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

Happy Friday:

Cryptographers have discovered a way to hack Bluetooth-enabled devices even when security features are switched on. The discovery may make it even easier for hackers to eavesdrop on conversations and charge their own calls to someone else's cellphone.

"Our attack makes it possible to crack every communication between two Bluetooth devices, and not only if it is the first communication between those devices," says Shaked.

Check out the time required to pull this off:

They show that once an attacker has forced two devices to pair, they can work out the link key in just 0.06 seconds on a Pentium IV-enabled computer, and 0.3 seconds on a Pentium-III. "This is not just a theoretical break, it's practical," says Schneier.

Well apparently dangerous enough that one affluent Kansas City community has decided that it is best to have police spy on teens during high school basketball games. Oh it gets better, apparently a carload of teens is enough for a Lenexa cop to follow you! So the parents should be up in arms right? Nope, they encourage the police, even calling them ("she told dispatchers that when she called home to check on her son, it sounded like a party was going on"). Yet surprisingly, despite this almost police-state like mentality against drinking, atti tudes are slow to change.

"Don't do crack; it's a ghetto drug" 06/19/2004 04:52 PM

Fifteen of us gathered last night for a screening of the 1992 Tim Robbins political satire Bo b Roberts.  This mockumentary of a folksinging conservative Wall Street trader turned politician has held up surprisingly well.  In the background of the movie, President Bush is in the White House and American troops are about to invade Iraq.  Gore Vidal does a great job playing a Ted Kennedy-style career senator.  The songs are fun but sadly the soundtrack has never been made available.

My favorite part of the movie is when Bob Roberts closes a letter to a 7-year-old girl in Vermont with the admonition "Don't do crack; it's a ghetto drug."

This is the perfect movie for an election-year party.
