12/30/2004 12:38 AMGreat news for VoIP companies! Internet Week is reporting that VoIP
providers will be able to remain free from state regulation. The final
decision was rendered in thanks by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
Eighth Circuit in St. Louis. It seems that their ability to escape the
potential regulation comes from the simple fact that VoIP is not
considered to be a true telephone service….

Mobile Phone Bridge To VoIP System?
Mobile Phone Bridge To VoIP System?
05/11/2004 04:32 PMi2 Telecom is making some news today for releasing what appears to be
some sort of
bridge device to
tie mobile phones to a VoIP network. The articles and the press
release about this offering are a bit confusing. i2's website doesn't
offer any more help. Looking over their site (which doesn't seem to
have this product listed yet), it appears that i2 Telecom is really
yet-another-Vonage-wannabe - though with fairly inexpensive prices.
What's interesting is that they pitch it in a different manner,
focusing much more on the box they give you - as if it's this magical
box that lets you make VoIP calls - rather than the service, like most
players in this market. This new offering is basically an update on
that box with one additional feature: if you call into your home line
with your mobile phone, the box will recognize your caller ID and let
you then bounce another call out, using the VoIP network. Basically,
it lets you use your mobile phone on your VoIP system. It's a neat
idea, but it does involve a few extra steps (calling your home line
first). I can see this being useful mainly for those who make a lot
of international phone calls, since the rates are cheaper. However,
with the amount of included minutes that most mobile phone plans
offer, it seems like it would have limited use for most domestic
calls. Also, it probably only makes sense for those who also need a
mobile phone plans and a home VoIP plan. If the person doesn't
already plan to use either separately, than the added cost of this
probably doesn't make much sense.

Vonage is dropping some killer gear on us today,
with product announcements that include this new Wi-Fi Voice-Over-IP
handset from UTStarcom that will let Vonage subscribers make calls
anywhere they can log onto a Wi-Fi connection. With an 80-hour standby
time and three to four hour talk time, the F1000 looks practical
enough to use as your primary phone, not to mention extremely handy to
have around as a secondary communications sidearm. Plus, you're sort
of getting a Wi-Fi location device for free.
The UTStarcom F1000 is a standard SIP phone, as well, meaning it
can be used with other Voice-Over-IP platforms besides Vonage.

While we're all waiting

phone today, like say the ZyXEL Prestige 2000W, which conveniently has

hassles some less-than-geeky users might run in to he can't recommend
to everyone, but for anyone who doesn't mind scrounging up a few IP
addresses, the ZyXEL looks like a fine handset for turning your Vonage

09/06/2004 12:50 PMCyberTAN is one of the largest SOHO networking manufacturers in
Taiwan. Chih-Kan Wang, vice president of the company’s Digital Home
and Advanced Technology Center, shared his thoughts on the company’s
status and future business prospects with DigiTimes. The company
currently has four business units, including two older units that made
up the company’s original core. These comprise the router business
unit, which produces broadband routers, access points and other CPE
(customer premise equipment) items, and the wireless client unit,
producing PCMCIA cards, mini-PCI cards and USB dongles.
CyberTAN has since created two new units: the Digital Home unit, which
so far has been producing wireless modules for digital television and
wireless DVD players but will soon add several more products to the
line-up, and the Telecom unit, which produces ADSL routers, IADs
(integrated access devices) and VoIP devices. CyberTAN’s primary focus
is on the SOHO market, said Wang.
Wang also explained that CyberTAN is having difficulty filling
positions in its research and development departments since the
company is continuously expanding its requirements for all these four
areas.

Morpheus Launching Phone Service -
Simple To Create VoIP VNOs?
Morpheus Launching Phone Service -
Simple To Create VoIP VNOs?
02/17/2004 10:21 PMStreamcast, the company behind the Morpheus file sharing system, is
making news today by announcing that they're going to offer Morpheus
users
their
own telephone service. The obvious connection most people make
will be with Skype, the software-based voice-over-the-internet play,
because it was written by the folks who created Kazaa - a competing
file sharing system to Morpheus. However, the Morpheus offer is quite
different, and opens up a much more interesting line of discussion.
In this case, Morpheus is just becoming a virtual network operator
(VNO). More commonly, people have talked about mobile VNOs (MVNOs)
such as Virgin Mobile, where some other network operator handles all
the dirty technical details, and a company like Virgin simply slaps
their brand and marketing efforts on top. In this case, Morpheus is
basically offering a Vonage-like service (powered by i2 Telecom), but
with their own brand. It will be interesting to see if other brand
companies start jumping into the VoIP VNO business as well. It's even
easier to do than jumping into the MVNO business, and I could see a
lot of companies deciding that there's a fit - though, it may be a
tough sell to a lot of customers. Are people really going to
gravitate to a Morpheus service over a Vonage offering at the same or
similar price? Still, one of the nice things about such a VoIP system
is just how easy it must be to create your very own VNO. How long
until companies are offering the ability to automatically set up your
own VoIP telephone company the same way you become an Amazon affiliate
or put a Google search on your page? Anyone interested in signing up
for a Techdirt phone service?

Vonage Offers Wi-Fi Phone
01/04/2005 12:45 AM Engadget slips the news that Vonage ships its F-1000 Wi-Fi handset:
The handset will work over hotspot networks allowing Vonage customers
to use their service while roaming. Boingo and Vonage had a deal in
place to test out VoIP over Wi-Fi hotspots, but it's unclear here in
the late evening how that ties together. Also, Vonage's site doesn't
yet list the announcement, so we don't know if they've partnered with
various networks to ease authentication. Authentication, or providing
credentials that let you use a given hotspot network--whether a paid
login or a WPA encryption key or handling 802.1X, even--is the biggest
stopping block in allowing VoIP over hotspot to work. A technology
like EAP-SIM, which would use a GSM SIM module to authenticate, might
be one method of logging in. But it requires every hotspot or hotspot
network that wants to allow this sort of connection to build the
back-end to handle it....
