htmlMost searches conducted on general-use search
engines such as Google deliver a plethora of irrelevant results --
like links to Leonardo DiCaprio when the keyword is "Titanic." But for
those seeking historical information, it's often better to start with
specialized Web sites, such as those hosted by the National Archives
or a maritime museum. Paul Miller, director of Common Information
Environment (CIE), says there's a wealth of information on
organizational Web sites, but most people never think to look there.
"There's an awful lot of stuff there that's not being used to its full
potential. Too much remains hidden among the low-quality information
that clutters the Web and behind technical, commercial and
administrative barriers." The goal of the CIE is to open up this
treasure trove of data held on publicly funded Web sites -- the
so-called "hidden Web" -- to non-specialist researchers. The effort is
sponsored by the British Library, the National Electronic Library of
Health, the Joint Information Systems Committee and Resource, the
council for museums, archives and libraries. To date, the CIE has
created two demonstration projects that illustrate the organization's
premise: one is for location-based information and the other for
health. The project is now working on additional projects, but must
deal with copyright issues while underway. "Digital rights management
is a big issue," says Miller, who adds that the solution is for public
organizations to move more aggressively to procure content for use
across different domains. This has been added to the articles section

Page, 1994-2003. The site, started by two
Berkeley students, provided quick
access to transit information in the San Francisco Bay Area, who later
received funding for their efforts in 1996. Instead, it gets replaced
by
this abomination of web
design. On the other hand, it is
very unusual for a web site to
keep the same user interface over the span of almost a
decade. Already, there have been
user interface rants,
complaints about not finding
information,
sarcastic commentary, and a brief
eulogy delivered from one of the
original creators, and it hasn't even been the first day. Is content
over style dead or are information sites like
this

New Mozilla site goes live: looks

architecture and writing
09/01/2004 04:21 AMBen just announced that the new Mozilla site that I commented upon
earlier has gone live. It does look a lot better visually, but as I
remarked earlier when reviewing the beta version (and offered to help
with), I think the Firefox page could still use some work on the
writing and information architecture. The writing needs to be punchier
and shorter and there need to be fewer styles and links on the first
page. And somebody needs to do something about the car. Making it
smaller was a good start, but it I still think one could make a much
better graphic to show off Firefox's features....
