Do You Need An Internet Pay Phone In
NYC?

Do You Need An Internet Pay Phone In
NYC?
11/17/2003 05:35 PM
While Verizon is busy adding WiFi to payphones in Manhattan, one smaller payphone owner has decided to go strictly wired. They've launched a bunch of "internet equipped" pay phones. They're basically just internet terminals (and, of course, they claim they block porn sites) - at the price of $0.25/minute - which can add up pretty damn quickly. You have to wonder how big a market they'll find. It seems like a pretty big expense to install these systems - which are likely to break early and often - when there's so much competition around. There are a ton of internet cafes, where the surfing experience is likely to be a lot more comfortable. Also, for anyone with a WiFi enabled device, you can find WiFi for free (or, at least, much cheaper than $0.25/minute) just about anywhere in Manhattan.
