Screenshot Open Administration for Schools (OAfS) is a Web-based school administration package. Open Admin does demographics, attendance, discipline, report cards, and has an online gradebook and parent viewing function. It is designed for elementary, K-12, and small high schools. It generates plain HTML and uses LaTeX for PDF generation. It also includes special education and division-wide central office modules (all schools run on the same server with different virtual sites; two sites per school, one for teachers, and one for the office). Parent functions are by separate parent/school site.
Changes:
Lightweight navigation was added. Updates were made to the gradebook and online viewing for parents/students of attendance, marks, and gradebook values. Other smaller fixes and improvements include password generation and bulk updates for more student fields.

Open Letter Against British Copyright
Indoctrination in Schools

Open Letter Against British Copyright
Indoctrination in Schools
08/06/2004 11:17 AM
The British Department for Education and Skills (DfES) recently launched a "Music Manifesto" campaign, with the ostensible intention of educating the next generation of British musicians. Unfortunately, they also teamed up with the music industry (EMI, and various artists) to make this popular. EMI has apparently negotiated their end well, so that children in our schools will now be indoctrinated about the illegality of downloading music. The ignorance and audacity of this got to me a little, so I wrote an open letter to the DfES about it. Unfortunately, it's pedantic, as I suppose you have to be when writing to goverment representatives. But I hope you find it useful, and perhaps feel inspired to do something similar, if or when the same thing has happened in your area.

245 Electronic Votes Lost In Florida

It's amazing just how many problems Florida can have with voting. The state that brought you the butterfly ballot and the hanging chad hasn't done much to improve its reputation as a place where your vote isn't particularly sacred. We've already written about electronic voting records that were deleted in a hard drive crash and electro nic audit trails that didn't match up with actual voting records, and now comes the news from Mikester that in the primary last month, one election official forgot to switch an e-voting machine from "testing" mode, meaning that 245 votes weren't counted. Luckily, this glitch was eventually caught a month later -- and didn't change the results of the election, but you have to wonder how many of these situations aren't caught at all.
