Intense Solar Flare
Intense Solar Flare
10/28/2003 11:08 PM The largest solar
flare of the current solar cycle shot off the sun earlier today.
After the media latched on to what was predicted to be mostly a
non-event last week (probably due to a NASA article released around
the same time about
a
super spacestorm) , it's not making as much news this time. But
you should
pay attention this
time. This could be the best and last chance for a lot of us
farther south to see some auroras before the sun dives into solar
minimum, assuming
all
the variables line up correctly this time. I recommend watching
the
Solar Terrestrial Dispatch, as
it is a great all around resource for solar activity and auroras that
includes live data and sightings reports by the general public.
Unfortunately though, no doubt as word IS spreading, that site is
being hammered again and may be quite slow.

01/01/2005 02:30 PMAP - As the insurgents in Iraq step up their attacks, the Army has

has meant moving the training from classrooms to more realistic
settings and teaching medics to keep fighting the enemy even if
it means sometimes delaying treatment of the wounded.

Clonus (AKA
Parts: the Clonus Horror) was
released on DVD
today. This ultracheap 1979 sci-fi thriller is about a compound where
clones are raised, unaware that their purpose in life is to provide
harvested organs (
more detail
here).
MST3K sent it up,
the
Onion sneers at it, but this
NY Times review (reg. reqd., scroll down) is respectful. You can
rent it now, or you can wait until July for the
megabudget, Michael
Bay-directed version of the
same damn
story.

The embryos are destroyed before they are 14-days old and never
allowed to develop beyond a cluster of cells the size of a pinhead.
The green-light was given by the research licensing body the Human
