RPG's as an art form (via Something Awful) " I've also been encountering different variations of the same monsters; for example, I was walking in these hills and was attacked by a slime with Ray Bans and a fedora. Another time it was a slime with a fake beard and glasses. I think whoever is producing these things, either the Dragonlord or some bored wizard, just ran out of ideas and are dressing them up to fool adventurers such as myself. I'm harder to trick than that, you sly devils. "

Screenshot Tile is a program that can tile windows on the desktop, either vertically or horizontally. It can avoid screen elements based on window manager "profiles" that are user-customizable. It has been mostly tested under MWM, but it also works with some multi-desktop window managers (ones that use the _WIN_WORKSPACE Atom, like FluxBox), given the "-m" option.

Realistic Argument for Broadband Access

Realistic Argument for Broadband Access 04/29/2004 05:54 PM
While many communities around the country vaguely hope that wireless networks will bring business to town, this Indiana town has some very real reasons for wanting broadband: Scottsburg, Ind. couldn't get any kind of broadband access from the incumbents so it spent $350,000 to build a wireless broadband network. The network equipment comes from Alvarion, which means that it's probably proprietary gear based on 802.11. The network has a very tangible economic affect on the town. Apparently, Chrysler promised to shut down the local Chrysler repair shop, which employs 60 people, if they couldn't get fast Internet access. Other local workers who telecommute threatened to move if they couldn’t get high-speed Internet access. Plus, the school system is saving a bundle with the new service. This Indiana town most certainly isn't alone in wanting broadband but failing to get it from the incumbents. While we already see lots of wireless ISPs serving these small markets, clearly they aren't serving every community that wants broadband. Perhaps WiMax will drive down prices enough to encourage WISPs to build out in more small towns....

Swedish developer Illuminate Labs announced on Wednesday the release of Turtle, a new Maya lighting renderer that was in Beta testing at more than 200 sites during the previous 13 months. Turtle 1.0 can render scenes both within Maya and as a stand-alone application. It features raytracing and global illumination algorithms called LiquidLight, 3D motion blur, true depth-of-field, animation and batch rendering, support for Maya shading networks and more. Turtle requires Maya 6 and sells for US$1,199 per workstation license, which comes with a graphic user interface (GUI), and $999 per render node license, which lacks a GUI.

Sidebar Communication

Sidebar Communication 06/17/2005 07:11 PM

Hollywood social networks are using IM Status (i.e. Busy, Away) as a communication channel (i.e. Status: Need Work). Excellent idea!

For Dave's Instant Outliner, this could be done very easily so one could see status of team members, friends, and family.

For blogrolls, a short status description element can be added to each feed. Blogroll has to be live though for this to work. How would it look? Where you see the orange XML pseudo-image on my blogroll to the right, you would see short messages from the bloggers like Need Work, Help Wanted, In Japan, Sick, or simply RIP for grave bloggers.

Note that the status could be little graphics like Sparkline or an image. Status of a dog, for example, will be a webcam snapshot.
