Earthquakes

Scientists Claim To Successfully Predict
Earthquakes
01/09/2004 09:50 PM
When I first moved to California from New York, and expressed to someone my concern about earthquakes, I was told that it's no different than natural disasters like hurricanes that hit the east coast. Of course, there is a very big difference: with a hurricane, you know it's coming and can protect yourself or get the hell out of town. Scientists have been working on ways to predict earthquakes for years, with little success. Some say it can't be done. However, some researchers are now claiming that they successful ly predicted the recent California earthquake and an earlier one in Japan. The predictions are not pinpoint predictions, but suggest a magnitude earthquake that is likely in a specific location within the next nine months. Many researchers are skeptical, but others do say that it's unlikely they were correct twice by dumb luck. Of course, the researchers don't want to reveal all their predictions publicly, because they say they don't want to spread fear and economic hardship on certain areas. However, they do plan to work with "the appropriate authorities" (whoever they may be) to continue to test their methodology. In the meantime, they will leak one prediction (in a sparsely populated area): a possible 6.4 magnitude quake in an area south of the Mojave Desert sometime before Sept. 5.

Anti-Spam Companies Claim Success; Email
Recipients Disagree
08/23/2004 12:04 PM
Because companies fighting the spam battle need to market themselves, many are touting how much success they've had in fighting spam. There's just one problem: most users are seeing more spam. There are ways to reconcile the differences, though. First, there still are a lot of people who don't use any spam filter. So, whether or not the spam filters are succeeding, these people are clearly seeing more spam. Second, even if the spam filters are succeeding in blocking out 95% or 99% or whatever percent they like to claim, there's still some getting through. With spammers increasing the amount of spam they send, the absolute number getting through increases as well. Still, it does make you wonder how we should define "success" in fighting spam.

Wi-Fi's Success is HomePlug Success 09/17/2004 12:24 PM
Leaders of the power line networking space say that Wi-Fi's success in the home helps the power line networking industry: A spokesman for Intellon, which makes power line networking chips, says that the dead spots that result from many Wi-Fi networks in homes create an opportunity for power line networking, which can be used for network access in the dead zones. HomePlug, the alliance of power line networking companies, is also hoping to get ahead of its networking competition with a new standard it is working on that will be fast enough to support high-definition TV....

Clonus (AKA Parts: the Clonus Horror) was released on DVD today. This ultracheap 1979 sci-fi thriller is about a compound where clones are raised, unaware that their purpose in life is to provide harvested organs (more detail here). MST3K sent it up, the Onion sneers at it, but this NY Times review (reg. reqd., scroll down) is respectful. You can rent it now, or you can wait until July for the megabudget, Michael Bay-directed version of the same damn story.

Rich sez, "British scientists have been granted permission to clone human embryos for medical research, it was announced today."
They plan to duplicate early-stage embryos and extract stem cells from them which can be used for radical new treatments.

The embryos are destroyed before they are 14-days old and never allowed to develop beyond a cluster of cells the size of a pinhead.

The green-light was given by the research licensing body the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority after weeks of discussion.

Dr Miodrag Stojkovic, from the university’s Institute of Human Genetics, said: “We are all set up and ready to go immediately as soon as the paper work is sorted out.
