Logan Airport deploys snitch-squad

Logan Airport deploys snitch-squad 04/17/2004 03:43 AM
Logan Airport is deploying undercover snoops who will keep an eye out for anxious, sweaty, inappropriately dressed air-travellers who are observing security measures. These people will be sent away for secondary cavity-screening. You know, the number of times I've shown up at a warm-weather airport in a cold-weather coat (formy destination), sweating, anxious, and bug-eyed at the National Guard teenagers threatening to blow their zits off with their hulking carbines... Welcome to the future: a boot stamping on a human face -- forever.
[O]fficials watch people as they move through terminals. They look for odd or suspicious behavior: heavy clothes on a hot day, loiterers without luggage, anyone observing security methods.

At the security checkpoints, screening supervisors have a score sheet with a list of behaviors on it. If a passenger hits a certain number, a law enforcement officer will be notified to question the person.

Simpsons fan creates tomacco

Simpsons fan creates tomacco 11/04/2003 02:00 AM
A Simpsons fan has created tomacco by cross-breeding tomatoes and tobacco:
"What we found was nicotine in the leaves". said scientist Ray Grimsbo. The plant grew off the tobacco roots and sucked up the nicotine, just like Tomacco on The Simpsons. The lab hasn't tested if the actual tomato has nicotine in it yet, but they say it probably does. "Generally in the fruit there is more material concentrated because that's what everything's going through to produce the fruit for the next generation. I would expect there would be more." And that would make the real life tomacco plant very poisonous. Rob Baur says he grew the tomacco plant just for fun, just to see if it would really work.

HarperCollins Creates Bookstore Hotspots

HarperCollins Creates Bookstore Hotspots 06/05/2005 10:56 PM
Publisher will build hotspots at bookstores in innovative approach: Sure, Barnes & Noble and Borders Books have had hotspots for some time now, with Borders claiming the older network. (Barnes & Noble signed its Cometa deal weeks before it shut down; now SBC operates B&N hotspots.) But HarperCollins's plan will bring Wi-Fi with a HarperCollins splash page to what sounds at least like a wider variety of booksellers and at no cost. It's an interesting move because many bookstores aren't set up to handle people with laptops, and there's always been some concern that access to perfect information in the form of book price comparisons at Amazon.com (or even my own service, isbn.nu) would erode on-the-spot impulse buying. The company said in a press release that they will launch a four-month pilot program, to be announced at this weekend Book Expo America. The publisher is providing free Wi-Fi access at the show....

Sanyo Creates Smallest FM Tuner Yet

Sanyo Creates Smallest FM Tuner Yet 08/03/2004 09:03 AM

sanyo_FM.jpg imageSanyo has developed a tiny FM tuner chip that is roughly half the size of current tuners on the market; they're calling it the "Easy Radio IC." It requires no other parts to operate and even has an upcoming version that can tune in AM as well (that's coming in September). At just 5mm wide, there's not any reason that any portable music player should be without FM radio, unless the manufacturer is just too stubborn to put it in.
