Comcast also released a letter sent to Eisner indicating that Eisner
had personally rejected Roberts' offer to enter into discussions about
a merger earlier in the week.
The letter from Roberts called it "unfortunate" that Eisner was not
willing to enter into discussions. "Given this, the only way for us to
proceed is to make a public proposal directly to you and your board,"
the letter stated.
Under the merger, Comcast said it would issue 0.78 of a share of its
stock for each Disney share, and Disney shareholders would retain 42
percent of the combined company.

JspISAPI
JspISAPI
05/23/2004 09:17 AM
To run Tomcat as is on
Windows
Server 2003, you had to run IIS 6.0 in IIS 5.0 Compability Mode
which disables all
the goodies IIS 6.0 brings to the table. Running Tomcat on
another port has
many downsides and replacing IIS 6.0 with Apache is not a choice
either if you need
to do ASP.NET tinkering as well as JSP and java servlet stuff like
I do.
Behind the scene, neither Apache Foundation nor Microsoft seem to
be interested in
fixing the problem even though there are more Tomcats running on
Windows platforms
than any other platforms. That sucks for developers like
me. So I started
writing an ISAPI Extension a few months back that runs Tomcat in
IIS 6.0 application
pools. As it goes, a crash project dropped on my lap and I
had to drop it after
spending only a weekend on it.
Now it looks like there is a solution called JspISAPI.
I can't touch my server just now, but I am going to give it a spin
next weekend.
It costs $50 bucks but that's far cheaper than my spending
additional 20 hours
needed to debug and test my ISAPI extension. Besides, I was
planning to give
mine away which would have left the authors of JspISAPI without
much of a market.
As a commercial developer, I want to support other commercial
developers by buying
their product instead of driving them into the ground to satisfy my
hippie ideals.

Tracing ISAPI Extension in IIS 6.0
Tracing ISAPI Extension in IIS 6.0
01/16/2004 01:02 PM
Woo. I just found this gem of an IIS 6.0 feature
while hopping around
for info prior to writing an ISAPI Extension for IIS 6.0.
It's called IIS
6.0 Enterprise Tracing for Windows:
Windows Server 2003 includes Enterprise Tracing for
Windows (ETW), a new
framework for implementing tracing providers that can be used for
debugging and capacity
planning. IIS 6.0 implements a number of providers to trace
key transitions and
the progress that an HTTP request makes as it moves through the IIS
service framework.
These providers include the following:
-
HTTP Service Trace. This provider traces new connections,
new HTTP requests
from a given connection, HTTP kernel cache hits, application
pool routing, and HTTP
request completion.
-
IIS: WWW Server. This provider traces the transition of a
request from HTTP.sys
to the worker process, start and stop events surrounding Common
Gateway Interface
(CGI) requests, and the transition of a request back to HTTP.sys
from the worker process.
This information reveals the type of request that is being
processed.
-
IIS: SSL Filter. This provider traces calls into and out
of the SSL Filter,
which is used for SSL traffic.
-
IIS ISAPI Extension. This provider traces the transition
of a request into
and out of ISAPI extension processing.
-
IIS ASP. Traces the start and completion of the execution
of an ASP request.
These tracing providers allow you to follow a request through all
of its phases. This
information is very useful in the problem isolation phase of
troubleshooting. For
example, ISAPI filters can often cause delays or hangs in HTTP
request processing.
The tracing functionality can help to determine which ISAPI filter
is causing the
delay for a given request.
Nice! It's a bit beastly to use and there isn't a GUI tool to
display the trace
logs prettily so my eyes won't cross, but it's will come in handy
when I find myself
up the creek wearing a blindfold.

Apple: The "i" Stands for iconic
Apple: The "i" Stands for iconic
06/01/2004 01:53 PM
Apple's
silhouette iPod ads have been far more pervasive than anyone probably
imagined, and now thanks to an anonymous New Yorker (or, more likely,
New Yorkers) armed with a Sharpie the posters have become a platform
for expressing the various feelings of hate, jealousy, passion, and,
yes, poetry, that the tropical-hued advertisements and their white
audio sperm inspire. Starting with the same argument levied against
the iPod's great uncle, the Walkman, the phrase, "The "i" in iPod
stands for isolation," was scribbled on the first ad, replicated down
the line with "irrational," "insecure," and other iWords taking the
place of "isolation." Deep! Ironically, the people that felt the need
to parley an mp3 player into social critique are exactly the people we
wear headphones to avoid. (Thanks, Matt!)
