Think of others when you name your files

Think of others when you name your files 07/21/2004 01:09 PM
This is not a technical story about Linux file names, but a brief thought about names we choose for files we have created ourselves, and how even the best file name you choose for yourself can become meaningless when you share that file with others.

You Still Want The Old Files, Right?

You Still Want The Old Files, Right? 04/07/2005 05:31 AM

Like many others, I too have been surprised by this bug in Windows' file explorer, where "replacing a folder" really means "merge the two folders" instead. Thankfully, no files were lost in the process, only a slightly confused human being who was surprised to find old files still lurking inside the folder.

Unfortunately, I now have to find a special location in my memory to keep this little fact whenever I operate a Windows machine.

Source files from ftp.gnu.org 10/28/2003 11:07 PM
As announced in this CERT advisory, it has recently been discovered that the ftp servers for GNU software were compromised back in March, although it is not believed that any of the source code housed there was affected. Fink relies on MD5 checksums when downloading software, and we have had no reports of incorrect checksums in Fink packages. The Free Software Foundation is in the process of verifying the integrity of all of the source code distributed from that ftp site. As of this writing, the source code for the following Fink packages have not yet been verified: autoconf2.54, emacs21, gprolog, groff, guile16, help2man, jwhois, libtool14, libosip1, sed, slib. It may be difficult to install those packages at present.

Group wants P2P files to pay.

Group wants P2P files to pay. 12/10/2003 10:16 PM
CNet: Group wants P2P files to pay. "The Content Reference Forum is hoping to create a kind of intelligent file that can be distributed through file-sharing networks like Kazaa, Web pages, e-mail or almost anywhere else online. Instead of containing a song or movie itself, the file would set up a process that automatically delivers files in the right format and potentially triggers an automatic payment system that could be changed moment to moment by the content distributor." The P2P aspect looks bogus; why would I share one of these reference files? Why would I try to download legitimate content through Kazaa? If I want legitimate content I'll go to the official source.

Putting together PDF files

Putting together PDF files 06/17/2004 08:21 AM
There are times when you need to combine multiple files from diverse sources into a single PDF file. In Windows or the MacOS it's easy -- use Adobe Acrobat. Sadly, Adobe hasn't deigned to put out a version of Acrobat for Linux, but there are a number of Linux utilities available that enable you to quickly and efficiently combine PDF files. This article looks at three command line utilities: Ghostscript, joinPDF, and pdfmeld. Each does a good job of combining PDF files, and they all pack some interesting features.

KennerToys.com have posted three PDF files you can download regarding Celebration III show hours, floor plans, booth prices and so much more. The interesting thing is that additional vendor passes cost $90 on pre-order and $105 at the event. Vendor passes for Celebration II were the same price as a three day pass. So it looks like this will be the price range for a typical four day pass to Celebration III.

Atheros Files for IPO

Atheros Files for IPO 12/02/2003 12:32 AM
Chipmaker Atheros files paperwork to have a public stock offering: News.com's Richard Shim reports that Atheros filed papers Nov. 26 to raise about $100 million in an initial public offering. The company had nearly $50 million in revenue in the first nine months of 2003 compared to $16.5 million in the same period last year, while that period's losses this year were about $12 million versus $16 million last year. Before Comdex, competitor Broadcom launched a broadside against Atheros's chipsets with the Super G Turbo mode turned on for 108 Mbps speeds. While Broadcom says the complaint isn't directly connected to Atheros, but rather with out-of-standards hardware in general, Atheros is in the target because of it was well-known the company was ready to launch its IPO....

David Pescovitz: Following previous posts on Sunjit the Chicken Man and An drei the Dog Boy, several BB readers emailed me their favorite references to wild children raised by animals. For example, this site talks about France's Wild Boy of Averyon, "a remarkable creature (who) came out of the woods" in 1800. The text comes from a great book called The Forbidden Experiment: The Story of the Wild Boy of Aveyron, by Roger Shattuck. Here is one naturalist's observations of the Wild Boy:
Lucan"When he is sitting down, and even when he is eating, he makes a guttural sound, a low murmur; and he rocks his body from right to left or backwards and forwards, with his head and chin up, his mouth closed, and his eyes staring at nothing. In this position he sometimes has spasms, convulsive movements that may indicate that his nervous system has been affected. There is nothing wrong with the boy’s five senses, but their order of importance seemed to be modified. He relies first on smell, then on taste; his sense of touch comes last. His sight is sharp; his hearing seems to shut out many sounds people around him pay close attention to. Nothing interests him but food and sleep."
BB reader Andy Scudder also points us to a transc ript of a NOVA documentary called "Secret of the Wild Child." And then Alberto Gaitan sends us to FeralChildren .com a comprehensive clearinghouse of information on "isolated, confined, wolf and wild children." Perhaps it's time for a big screen remake of the 1977 TV series Lucan?
