RSS reader market share among football

RSS reader market share among football
fans
03/28/2005 04:10 PM

The Read/Write Web has an interesting post about RSS aggregator stats which to some degree confirms my suspicions about RSS reader market share. Over the past few months, I've seen several posts about market share which I believed were inaccurate for many reasons, not the least of which was the fact that they really determined market share among geeks rather than the wider non-technical audience (yes, many non-techies are reading RSS now!).

In this particular example, the top aggregator being used is My Yahoo, followed by FeedDemon and then Bloglines. As Kevin Donahue points out, FeedDemon is easy to use, which makes it an obvious choice for the non-geek.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that there's very little you can determine about RSS reader market share when looking at a single set of feeds (and of course, basing market share on server hits is inaccurate to start with), but the fact that the results vary so widely based on which feeds are examined speaks volumes about the accuracy of these surveys.

PS: Kevin, I agree that Fanblogs should be in FeedDemon's default set of feeds - I'll add it to the "Sports" group in the next build. However, given the number of feeds you offer, you might want to consider providing your visitors a custo m build of FeedDemon that's pre-loaded with all of your feeds.

Gold? 03/20/2003 05:31 PM
Who is Jason Cain? Apparently someone who has: "the first website devoted to teaching moneymaking strategies to bloggers." Excuse me? Have I been in the dark for the past year? Who is this guy? Is anybody taking him seriously? I'm not talking about GoldBlogger, I'm talking about GoldBlogger. Technorati shows only one inbound link / blog for it. Feedster? "0 posts found, 0 Shown." GoldBlogger? Has anybody wasted their money on this gold-digging resource? Do Dave, Nick, Glenn, Andrew, and Rebecca know they're being quoted? If so, I can't imagine why I haven't heard of this guy before. What's more, he's got a pop-out window begging visitors to sign up for a "FREE REPORT." It's either my sinuses draining or the thought of this site; I'm kinda sick to my stomach - and not in the Raging Cow kinda way....

Let your fans know they won't get sued 04/19/2004 03:11 PM

If you're a musician, and you want to let your fans know they won't get sued if they download your songs, you should check out the Music Sharing License. It lets your fans know they can download and share, but not sell or make any commercial use out of your music. The Uptones, a Bay Area based ska band, are a great example of a band who makes a few songs available under the Music Sharing License, so their fans can download, but not worry about lawsuits.

News.com reports that Wharton feels the Google love. Apparently in radio ads they're suggesting that listeners Google for "Wharton West" rather than remember the longer domain name. "We took a calculated risk because we figured out how to get (top billing) in the first place, but we keep monitoring it, and if it changes we have to do something else," [said Neal Nevaras, director of executive programs.] "But why do I pay for it if I don't have to." Meanwhile, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer the practice of Googling was mentioned. According to plasticbag it was: Willow: "Have you tried googling her?" Xander (shocked): "Willow, she's only seventeen!" As Mark Bernstein points out, she not only appears on Google, but has her own domain. plasticbag: "And it will be funny." plasticbag: "Maybe you had to be there..." MetaFilter: "An example of innovative web design." W6 Daily: "...this isn't the site..."...

At the stroke of midnight tonight (CST), I'm "officially" locking the FeedDemon code in preparation for its final release. It's been a long time coming, so I'm excited to finally get to this point.

I should add that several people reported an "access violation" error when closing RC4a, but it looks like this has been resolved in a RC4b build I made available for testers.

If you're using RC4b and are still seeing problems, please let me know by posting in the feeddemon.beta newsgroup on my news server.
