South Korea Bucks Asian Trend of Hotspot
Usage
07/06/2004 11:56 AM
China's hotspot market grows, but users don't follow: The payment system might be hampering some of the growth of various networks throughout and near China. The cost also seems incredibly out of line: China Netcom charges US$3.62 per hour and service must be purchased in advance using a hard-to-find prepaid card. China Netcom has just about 160 locations, most of which were installed nearly a year ago. Shanghai Telecom has several hundred hotspots, and pushed usage initially through an ADSL bundle. China Mobile has nearly 1,500 hotspots, but they allow users to pay via their cellular phone bill using SMS to confirm purchase of time. South Korea's usage is mentioned in passing: with tens of thousands of hotspots in that country, hundreds of thousands of people are regular users....

Vietnam Wants Internet Cafes To Monitor

Vietnam Wants Internet Cafes To Monitor
Internet Usage
06/08/2004 06:31 PM
If there's one thing that's obviously available in bunches on the internet, it's "bad information." However the Vietnamese government has decided that "bad information" (which they seem to believe is anything they don't agree with, or anything that portrays them in a negative light - this post, for example, would probably qualify) is illegal and must be stopped online. They've now told local governments to start monitoring internet usage and have warned internet cafe owners they can be fined or jailed if any of their patrons uploads or downloads "bad information." To help track this sort of thing, they also want all internet cafe owners to "document what Web sites their clients visit and for how long." In other words, it's now prohibitively expensive to run an internet cafe in Vietnam. It's amazing that these sorts of regimes< /a> honestly believe that stopping such info, at the cost of killing off all of the benefits the internet provides, is actually worthwhile.

comes to Mac OS X
06/17/2004 04:17 PM
Developer Vicomsoft has updated SuperInten dent, a module used as part of the company's InterGate solution, to Mac OS X. While InterGate allows businesses and schools to manage their network connections and Internet firewalls, the SuperIntendent module provides detailed reports of Internet usage. Network administrators can use the module to generate reports by user or IP address, by the types of Web sites visited, by the types of Internet protocols used, and by other criteria. They can drill down through any of the reports to obtain more granular data. InterGate pricing starts at US$99 for five users, with SuperIntendent starting at $349 as a companion module, and scales up from there. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2.6 or higher, a Mac with a G3 or better processor and 50MB hard drive space. A 30-day demo of InterGate is available for download from the Vicomsoft Web site, after you fill out a request form.

Rural internet usage differs from urban:
new Pew study
03/06/2004 01:55 AM

Rural Areas and the Internet , a new research study from the Pew Internet and American Life project , explores emergent similaries and differences between urban and rural internet cultures. Rural internet users tend to be slightly older than their urban counterparts, use machines outside the home and have fewer choices of internet service provider ( ISP ) to connect.

Notably ,

[w]hile the differences are not gaping, rural users are less likely than urban and suburban users to have bought a product online, made a travel reservation, or done their banking online. Even rural users who have been online a few years or more are still less likely to have ever performed transactions over the Web than their urban and suburban counterparts.
