Wireless Philadelphia launch
Wireless Philadelphia launch
04/08/2005 06:35 PM
Yesterday, I attended the press conference at which Philadelphia
mayor John Street (that's him in the photo) announced the formal
launch of Wireless Philadelphia. This is the city-wide wireless
broadband network that has been the source of both so much excitement
and so much angst on the part of incumbents.
As Street, and Philly CIO Dianah Neff (the force behind the project)
made clear, however, the city isn't just blindly trying to replace
private connectivity providers. Philadelphia has established a
separate non-profit corporation, which will contract with private
companies to build the network. It will then offer the network as an
open wholesale platform, with third-party service providers offering
the retail connections to end users. That means carriers, ISPs, and
hotspot aggregators will all benefit from the city's investment, not
compete with it.
No city money will be spent on the project. All costs will be covered
from revenues. That's right; the network won't be free. It will cost
an estimated $16-$20/month for unlimited access, which is a bargain
considering that you can pay $10 just to surf in one Starbucks for a
couple hours. The city will be a customer of the wireless network for
its internal communications activities, which is expected to save it
$2 million per year in telecommunications costs once. And as Street
and Neff pointed out, there are all sorts of potential ancillary
benefits and services to be delivered on top of the connectivity
platform.
It's exciting to live in the place that it pioneering something that
I'm confident all major cities will want to do within the next 5-10
years.
By the way, we're organizing a workshop track at
Supernova on municipal
broadband. The activity around municipal wireless in particular is
just too great to ignore. And this decentralization of connectivity
and broadband policy is a perfect example of the Supernova themes.

AT&T Wireless Will Launch 3G in Four
Cities Next Week
07/15/2004 03:36 PMReuters reports that AT&T Wireless is poised to roll out its
W-CDMA 3G cellular data offering in Detroit, Phoenix, San Francisco,
and Seattle next week: AT&T Wireless had been saying "by the end
of the year," and this leak of a near-term launch is apparently
surprising. The company is only promising 200 to 300 Kbps, but it's
likely that W-CDMA will offer much higher burst rates, slightly slower
than 1x-EvDO, which Verizon Wireless plans to spend $1 billion in the
next several months to expand throughout major markets in the U.S. I
expected a rollout in Seattle because AT&T Wireless is
headquartered in this region--for the time being. The merger with
Cingular will certainly result in an almost total shutdown in this
area as there's no logical, only historical reasons for this
geographical location. The service will require one of two phones from
Nokia and Motorola to access. As TechDirt notes, AT&T Wireless has
to launch service in four cities before the end of the year to avoid a
requirement to repay $6 billion to investor DoCoMo. Elsewhere, I've
seen this figure and deadline rejected by certain executives involved
in the transaction, but I don't believe there's been a definitive
refutation. [link via TechDirt]...

AT&T Wireless To Launch IXI-Based
Messaging Device
AT&T Wireless To Launch IXI-Based
Messaging Device
09/14/2004 05:25 AMPhonescoop lives up to their name with the scoop that
AT&T Wireless
is getting ready to offer an inexpensive messaging device called
the ogo, that will let users send instant messages and emails. While
a few other sites have picked up on this story, they're mostly
focusing on what the device most likely competes with (perhaps the
Danger Sidekick II), but what's
much more interesting is that
this is the first device using the IXI Personal Mobile Gateway we've
been talking about
since
2001, which has been
getting a lot more attention over the past year or so.
While it's completely up in the air how well this particular device
will do, it will be interesting to see how well the IXI system works,
and whether or not the concept catches on at all. For those who
haven't been following this, the Personal Mobile Gateway idea is to
make mobile device much more modular, rather than cramming too many
features into a single box. One device (in this case, the ogo) acts
as the "hub" of the system, and has a cellular connection to the
nearest tower just like a regular mobile phone. However, other
devices are designed to easily and quickly connect to the hub via
Bluetooth and piggyback on its wireless connection to the outside
world. While many assumed the hub would be part of the "phone"
itself, that doesn't have to be the case -- as evidenced by this
messaging device which has no phone. However, by slapping together a
simple phone device that only needed a bluetooth connection, it could
connect through the messaging device and a simple (cheaper) phone
could be offered. Another device could be a music player, or a larger
device for surfing the web. The idea is that there are endless
possibilities to add in other devices and use the most reasonable
device for the pressing need. Of course, many people respond by
pointing out that one of the last things they want would be
more devices to carry around. Still, with some big names
throwing their support behind the IXI PMG concept, it's worth watching
to see how well it's implemented and whether or not people seem to
like it.
