Sony and McDonalds Do Download Deal

"Burger behemoth McDonalds is doing a marketing deal with Sony to promote its download music service. Under the terms of the agreement buyers of Big Macs will receive a voucher for a free download, according to the Financial Times." [The Register]

It slays me that these online music services are willing to give away music for free, but they won't work with libraries - in other words, let us circulate their music - in order to introduce the technology to the other 80% of the world.

Sheesh - now they even work with hotels, but completely miss the boat on libraries.

The Chicago Apple Store

The Chicago Apple Store 06/25/2004 08:32 PM

I'm writing this from the second floor of the Apple store on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. We spent the day with the guys from 37 Signals at The Building of Basecamp Workshop. I'm on a little iMac, and I have to admit it's impressive....the store, I mean.

Everything is clear lucite, bleached wood, and concrete. Even the stairs are translucent plastic of some kind. I gotta say — Apple has a thing for style. There's a forty seat movie theater up here, but I have no idea what it's for.

I just called Rob and left him a message that I was standing in his own, personal Nirvana. I better get out of here, actually, because some of these machines are looking really nice (but how do you live without a scroll wheel?!).

The iMac I'm on has a little camera on top of it, and it's displaying real-time video of me, but I can't figure out how to get it to take a picture. You'll just have to take my word for it that I'm actually here.

Joe and I have a pizza waiting for us at the Pizzar ia Uno on Ontario and Ohio. Gotta run.

(MacCentral)
08/31/2004 07:26 PM
MacCentral - Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, took a cue from his boss, CEO Steve Jobs, as he unveiled one more thing at the end of his keynote to kick off this week's Apple Expo in Paris: an iMac G5 that includes the entire system inside a 17- or 20-inch LCD screen. Continuing the all-in-one theme that started with the original CRT iMac, the G5 edition features a new industrial design that does away with the hemispherical base of the previous generation all together. Schiller said that the new iMacs will be available in mid-September.

Apple iMac G5

Apple iMac G5 08/31/2004 06:03 AM

imac_g5_paris.jpg imageAnd it lives! Apple has fully unveiled the new iMac G5, and it's basically a Pizza box PC that looks a lot like the new Cinema displays, except white. Available in 17- and 20-inch form, the machines will come with 1.6 and 1.8GHz G5 processors, respectively. I'll go ahead and throw up this post with pictures, then actually wake up and jump up with more details.

Read - Product Page [Apple]

Update: One sort of geeky thing that immediately is noticable is that the iMac G5 doesn't share the "50% of the processor speed" bus as the PowerMac G5s. That's going to be a real performance wrinkler (although still a welcome bump from the G4).
