took a turn for the worse. The IBM trial has been delayed as SCO
requested, but IBM's counterclaims will not be separated. SCO's
prospects in the Novell case are looking even worse.

Move over XPrize, Elevator:2010
is here. They're offering $50,000 to the best "climber" prototype,
with a couple of other contests for some other pieces of the
puzzle.
We firmly believe that the set of technologies that underlie the
infinite promise of the Space Elevator can be demonstrated, or proven
infeasible, within a 5 year time-frame.
And hence our name. Elevator:2010. we promise to get an answer for
you by then.
We've talked about space
elevators before, and we weren't too optimistic about them.

Scientist
Imagines Elevator Reaching 62,000 Miles Into Space: This seems so
wrong on so many levels.
President Bush wants to return to the moon and put a man on Mars.
But scientist Bradley C. Edwards has an idea that's really out of this
world: an elevator that climbs 62,000 miles into space.
Edwards thinks an initial version could be operating in 15 years, a
year earlier than Bush's 2020 timetable for a return to the moon. He
pegs the cost at $10 billion, a pittance compared with other space
endeavors.
Wikipedia has a
huge article on this concept, in which they say this:
A space elevator would present a considerable navigational
hazard, both to aircraft and spacecraft. Aircraft could be dealt with
[...], but spacecraft are a more difficult problem. Over a long period
of time all satellites with perigees below geostationary altitude
would eventually collide with the space elevator, as their orbits
precess around Earth.
Yeah, that sounds safe.

.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?pr03146Of all the personal
computers to be unwrapped during the holiday season, more than 80
percent will be used to go online and search the Web's more than 92
million gigabytes of data (comparable to a 2 billion-volume
encyclopedia). Getting online is the easy part, finding a useful Web
page is a bit harder—keeping track of a useful Web page is another
issue altogether.
People have devised many tricks—such as
sending e-mails to themselves or jotting on sticky notes—for keeping
track of Web pages, but William Jones and Harry Bruce at the
University of Washington's Information School and Susan Dumais of
Microsoft Research have found that often people don't use any of them
when it comes time to revisit a Web page. Instead, they rely on their
ability to find the Web page all over again.
The Mall
The Mall
07/09/2004 03:22 PMMost folks, when they say “let’s go to the mall,”
they mean the local mall—it’s just The Mall, it
doesn’t need a name.
And many folks remember The Mall from their teenage years forever.
Every mall later on is viewed through the filter of that First Mall,
the Ur-Mall.
For me that mall was the Christiana Mall in Delaware. MacNN reports that
they’re getting an Apple store. I haven’t been there in
almost 20 years, but for some reason this made me glad.

We used to walk around The Mall talking out loud about rats, hoping to
spook the other shoppers. People gave us funny looks but we never
managed to cause a stampede.
