Bluetooth As A Way Of Sniffing Out
Hidden Expensive Gadgets?

Bluetooth As A Way Of Sniffing Out
Hidden Expensive Gadgets?
06/17/2005 03:33 PM
What is it about new technologies and crime that make people simply assume that it must be true? Last year we talked about polic e passing on urban legends about certain crimes. The latest questionable police warning is pointed out with reasonable skepticism by Engadget saying that police in the UK are warning that crooks are using Bluetooth to sniff out hidden computers and phones that people leave in their cars. The idea is that the crook would walk around with a Bluetooth-enabled phone and look for profiles to link up with. If one is there, then he knows that the car he's next to has something Bluetooth-enabled in it, making it worthwhile to break-in. Or, so goes the theory. The police don't seem to have any evidence of this, but they estimate that more than half of all car break-ins now involve this technique. They don't actually appear to have caught anyone who's done this, so it seems like someone came up with this possibility, and now they assume that any Bluetooth-enabled gadget that's been stolen must have been stolen that way.

Surnova resurrected, eXeem launched

Surnova resurrected, eXeem launched 12/30/2004 10:00 PM
Xeni Jardin: Popular torrent-helper site Suprnova has re-launched, sans torrents. And BoingBoing reader Derek says,
After a few days of having a teaser on their site, Suprnova's Sloncek did an interview with NovaStream.org about a new P2P app and network called eXeem that will be released for download in a couple of weeks. It's being developed by a new, unnamed company, which asked Sloncek to be a representative for them.

It will be Windows only, with no Mac or Linux versions planned at this time. It will be ad supported, and not just banner ads either. It will be full of adware, most of which you can opt out of, according to Sloncek. Some of the less intrusive ones will be required for the application to function though.

Apparently eXeem is based off of BitTorrent, but is different enough that it can't be called a BitTorrent client, and I assume it won't be compatible with BitTorrents either. The application will be downloadable from eXeem.com in a couple of weeks.

Lin k to details, and here's a link to a .zip of eXeem Beta 0.16. Pseudonym sez: "It won't actually work because of a lack of a working beta code but if ye are curious to have a look at the program then by all means do..."

Trust Wireless Bluetooth Tablet

Trust Wireless Bluetooth Tablet 06/14/2004 08:06 AM

Wireless-Bluetooth-Tablet_2.jpg imageAlthough they probably could have come up with a slightly snappier name for it, the 'Wireless Bluetooth Tablet' from Trust does pretty much exactly what you'd think it would, adding drawing pad capabilities to any Bluetooth-equipped PC. While the wireless feature might not be that useful right next to your machine, in board room and other presentation settings, it could come in pretty handy. The Tablet has 512 levels of pressure sensitivity and a three button pen, is powered by AAA or AA batteries, and can be hooked up to a PC by USB in situations where no Bluetooth is available. Recommended price is around £85 (~$150).

Pocket PC to have Bluetooth, too
11/03/2003 12:18 PM
Dell is confirming that they will be putting Bluetooth into the next version of their wireless Axim X3i Pocket PC which is due out next year (the current version only has built-in 802.11b WiFi, though that isn't anything to complain about). They originally were going to put it in there (the Bluetooth logo even appears on its antenna), but took it out to keep costs down. Read...

Bluetooth Wireless Mouse Recommendation
Needed
12/17/2004 06:32 PM
Okay, I'm really digging this full-szied bluetooth keyboard for my Powerbook. So much so, that I'm tempted to buy a second one to leave at work. But having a larger keyboard keeps my hands uncomfortably far from the touch pad. Anyone got a recommendation for a bluetooth mouse that has more than one button (sorry, Apple) and works well with a Powerbook? I'll probably use it left-handed about half the time, so I'd prefer one that is not shaped for...
