October
07/23/2004 03:10 AMMicrosoft Corp. on Thursday indicated that
Virtual PC for Mac Version 7 will likely be released
in October, though the schedule is entirely dependent on Microsoft's
efforts to ship a new service pack for its Windows XP operating
system. This is the first clarification the company has provided about
Virtual PC 7's release schedule since
confi

Mac users to run various versions of Windows software applications and
operating systems by emulating the characteristics of an actual
hardware PC on their Macintosh. Previously sold by Connectix Corp.,

Microsoft Moves Virtual PC from Linux
11/03/2003 10:03 AMMicrosoft confirmed to eWEEK.com that an upgrade to Virtual
PC—software it purchased from Connectix Corp. in February that lets
enables users to run multiple PC-based operating systems
simultaneously on one workstation—is close to being released to
manufacturing. However, the new version will no longer offer official
support for BSD Unix, Linux, NetWare or Solaris on Intel.
Carla Huffman, a product manager in the Windows Client Division,
explained, "Customers will be able to run most variants of Linux, as
well as NetWare and BSD, as guest OSes on Microsoft's version of
Virtual PC. However, Virtual PC is optimized for Windows around key
customer scenarios."

2004, but the battle for the PDA operating system market has heated up
as PalmSource and Microsoft were in a virtual tie in shipments in the
first quarter of 2004, according to preliminary results from Gartner,
Inc. Palm OS shipments declined by 20.7 percent in the first quarter
of 2004 compared with the same period last year (see Table 1). Palm OS
market share slipped to 40.7 percent, while the Windows CE market
share increased to 40.2 percent. Microsoft licensees have been
steadily chipping away at the Palm OS lead since 2000, when Microsoft
accounted for 11 percent of the PDA market.

09/15/2004 07:29 PMMicrosoft have decided to not make available Virtual Server 2005 for

promotion:
The VS and MSDN teams have collaborated to create a special offer

subscribers between October 1, 2004 and March 31, 2005. This is a

special access to Virtual Server 2005 Standard and Enterprise Editions
as downloads from MSDN Subscriber Downloads only. Virtual Server 2005
Standard and Enterprise Editions will not be made available by

This is the full retail, production version of the product and does
not include the typical MSDN restrictions of running only in dev/test
environments and can be run in production (except on XP Pro).

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven
The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven
04/27/2004 05:27 PMMobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are nothing new. Virgin,
both in the UK and the US, has been quite successful creating their
own mobile phone carrier, despite not having a network of their own,
but simply handling the branding and management, while leaving all the
technology issues to a network operator partner. So far, most MVNOs
seem to be targeting the youth market (often with "pre-paid plans"),
and considering just how
lucrative
that market seems these days, it's no surprise that plenty of
others want into the market. However, operating the whole MVNO is
probably a lot of work, so now we're getting to the point where you
have
virtual MVNOs (VMVNOs) who will do all the work for a
company, and simply slap their brand on the final product. That seems
to be what's happening with convenience store 7-Eleven, who has
announced plans to
sell pre-paid
mobile phones and service under the "Speak Out" brand - though,
all the work appears to be done by Ztar Mobile. Other retailers are
quickly expected to follow. Wal-Mart is at the top of the list, with
Costco and Home Depot also apparently considering their own mobile
phone offerings. The idea is to target younger users, or those with
bad credit histories, who can simply pick up a phone at the store, and
use it until their minutes run out, at which point they can top it up
again - back at the store, of course.

12/19/2004 03:25 PMI really like the News & Blogs RSS aggregation feature in
Thunderbird. Particularly how it loads the webpage instead of just
the article summary. However, I think there may be a virtual memory
leak. I have about 30 feeds that check for updates every 60 minutes.
If I leave Thunderbird running for a few days, particularly over the
weekend, the memory and virtual memory usage keeps adding up:
I've even had a few "Out of Virtual Memory" Windows errors. I've had
this error in Thunderbird 0.8 and the Oct 21st nightly. And on both
my home (XP) and work (W2K Server) machines.
Anyone else have the same issue? Is there a bug for this? I'll ask
here since Bugzilla search is pretty much useless.
Virtual Reference So Virtual We Couldn't

Virtual Reference So Virtual We Couldn't
Use It
07/07/2004 01:15 AMAnother virtual reference failure tonight. Kailee was reading about
Neti and Ditto, the cloned monkeys, when she asked if we could find a
picture of them. After a couple of fruitless attempts on the web,
I again suggested she try my System's virtual reference
project since we still had 15 minutes before they "closed" for the
night.
So we fired up the URL and after a couple of confusing attempts to
connect, we waited for a librarian to "answer" our call. And we
waited. And we waited. And we waited. We finally gave up and submitted
the question via email, only to be told we'd probably receive an
answer in 1-2 business days.
It's extremely frustrating to try to teach Kailee to turn to
librarians online for help only to keep running into problems and dead
ends when she actually tries to do this. If she didn't have librarian
parents, I'll bet she'd be giving up on us now.
