OSDL: Linux center of gravity?
01/09/2004 09:58 PMNewsForge learned recently, as a result of electronic conversations
with an anonymous (but well-known) Linux kernel hacker, that chatter
among some kernel hackers reflects a degree of distrust of OSDL, the
Open Source Development Lab. This report airs the major issues
identified in those conversations and allows OSDL the opportunity to
respond to them. We also asked IDC analyst Dan Kusnetzky and two
kernel hackers who work for OSDL, Linus Torvalds and Andrew Morton, to
weigh in with their own comments on OSDL's role and behavior.

in terms of personal computing remains elusive to much of the rest of

to Linux
02/10/2004 02:48 AMIn a phone interview Friday, Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) CEO
Stu Cohen said, "As Linux continues to grow, Microsoft will port some
of their applications to run on Linux." There has been speculation
about this for years, and this is still speculation, but Cohen is head
of an organization that says it is "increasingly being recognized as
the center-of-gravity for the Linux industry," and is rapidly proving
himself at least as effective a Linux marketer as the freckle-faced
boy in IBM's Linux ads, so his speculations carry more weight than
most.

application providers, or to leverage the inherent security,
reliability and manageability of Linux, more companies are starting to
consider desktop Linux strategies and implementation.

02/12/2004 01:31 AMNewsFactor - If its lawsuit against Novell (Nasdaq: NOVL) fails, SCO
may be history. So says OSDL (Open Source Development Labs) in a newly
published position paper authored by a Columbia University law

little effect on the adoption of Linux.

01/22/2004 02:10 AMOSDL: it's not just for data centers and carrier-grade Linux anymore.
Not as of this morning, that is, when OSDL issued a press release to
announce the formation of a third initiative: the Linux desktop. The
charter of the new "Desktop Linux Working Group" is "to work with the
open source community to identify a broad set of Linux desktop models,
then develop specifications and deliver reference implementations."
NewsForge had the opportunity to visit briefly with the OSDL CEO Stu
Cohen this morning, following the announcement.

04/13/2005 08:28 AMEarlier this year, free software and Samba developer Andrew Tridgell
was named as the second Open Source Development Labs fellow, sharing
the title only with Linux creator Linus Torvalds. Downplaying the
moniker and claiming to be more of a "bloke" from Down Under, where he
continues to work, Tridgell -- known by many as "Tridge" -- explained
that his move from IBM to OSDL was really meant to give him more time
to focus on the newest version of Samba4, a FOSS file, and print
server for Windows. He talked about the latest version of the software
that "opens Windows to a wider world," along with a few other
subjects, in a recent email interview with NewsForge.
