IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM

ifd-iv.jpg imageFor embedded computing hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection; that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around $2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives instead.

Update: Reader Tom Lee brings up a much cheaper option for hackers on a budget (after the jump.)

For 2006 models, they'll be putting it in the Sonata, Alantra and Santa Fe. This isn't really enough to convince me to guy buy a Hyundai, but it's good to see auto makers finally taking to satellite radio.

Microsoft Java software gets a reprieve
until 2007
04/14/2004 02:14 AM
Users of Microsoft Corp.'s Java Virtual Machine (JVM) have an extra three years to drop the software and migrate to Microsoft's .Net or a competing Java product following the company's broad deal with Sun Microsystems Inc. early this month. Microsoft was set to end support for its JVM on Sept. 30, much to the dismay of developers who built applications to work with the software. Now Microsoft has extended security patch support for its JVM until Dec. 31, 2007, Brian Keller, a Microsoft product manager, said Tuesday. Security patches are the only support Microsoft currently provides for the JVM. "This is certainly very good for many of our customers. It means they have over three additional years to migrate their applications. In some cases those applications were already set to retire before 2007," Keller said. The extension was agreed on in the settlement and collaboration pact Microsoft struck with Sun Microsystems Inc. early this month.

DirecTV Plans 1,500 HDTV Channels by

09/10/2004 09:26 AM

DirecTV has announced plans to add four new satellites to their constellation, which once fully launched an integrated by early 2007, will allow them to broadcast up to 1,500 HDTV channels. The first two, Spaceway 1 and Spaceway 2 (if you care to get personal) should go up by next year, and will add 500 HD channels. With terrestrial broadcasting seeming to drop the ball on HD broadcasts, cable and satellite television may be the great hope for widespread adoption of the high-quality format.

Cingular says it will build UMTS, but needs spectrum first: The article doesn't cite Cingular's expected speed, but notes that the company will finish its EDGE (roughly 100 kbps) build-out by this summer. Merging with AT&T Wireless provides Cingular with that firm's EDGE infrastructure, as well as the four trial cities for UMTS that AT&T Wireless has scheduled. UMTS service by Cingular might take until 2006 or 2007 for broad availability; testing begins in Atlanta this summer....
