Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one
besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now
Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch
Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to
the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's
the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the
company used them as weapons against free and open source software
projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome
Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or
maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has
truly seen the open source light?

04/09/2004 04:04 PMLinux may be cutting-edge software, but it runs just fine on hardware
that would make Microsoft's current operating systems beg for relief.
I took four different distros and installed them on a five-year-old
rebuilt IBM ThinkPad 600E supplied by LinuxCertifed. They proved that
Linux on older hardware can be a cost-effective combination.

07/03/2004 05:28 AMA friend got a new laptop with Windows XP pre-installed. "Does this
come with an IRC program?" he asked. No, it doesn't. There are plenty
of IRC programs for Windows, but you need to download and install them
yourself. Word processing? Not included. Spreadsheet? Windows leaves
you on your own yet again. I swear, by the time you buy or download
all the software it takes to actually do something with Windows, you
might as well install Linux. It would take a lot less time. I don't
know about you, but my time is worth money, and if I need to do a
whole bunch of software downloading and installation to make my
computer usable, we're talking huge TCO (Total Cost of Ownership).

Insurance for Linux users: why is it
needed?
05/26/2004 07:36 AMWhen a start-up firm called OSRM (Open Source Risk Management)
announced two months ago that it planned to offer standard product
liability insurance to Linux users and developers, many in the Linux
community wondered why. For some, such coverage appeared to be an
unwarranted admission that there was something wrong with Linux. Sure,
vendor specific indemnification of users was appearing, but IBM
itself, the first target for SCO's absurd legal claims denied the
need. As recently as the last LinuxWorld Conference and Expo, IBM's
Jim Stallings, general manager for Linux at Big Blue, was quoted as
saying, "The claims that have been alleged [by SCO] against IBM [have]
no basis, so indemnification is not needed." NewsForge recently
interviewed OSRM's founder and CEO, Daniel Egger, to gain his
perspective on the issue.

01/05/2004 04:50 AMEvery time I write an article about normal people using Linux with
little or no training, a few weisenhimers inevitably accuse me of
being an overly optimistic advocate by not warning readers that it
takes a least some knowledge of Bash to run and maintain a Linux
installation. The problem with this accusation is that it might have
been true in 1998, but it is not true in 2004. It is now possible to
run Linux without knowing any commands beyond point-and-click,
cut-and-paste, and drag-and-drop. Indeed, those are the only ones I
use for everyday computing myself.

12/02/2003 12:19 PMMore news about the recent break-ins on four Debian project servers
emerged yesterday when Wichert Akkerman of the Debian project issued a
new security alert about the situation. It appears that a flaw in the
Linux kernel was exploited and a "sniffer" put in place to highjack
passwords. It was with the purloined password that access to the
Debian servers was achieved.

Microsoft asks Linux users, "How can we
get your business?'
12/21/2003 12:06 PMMicrosoft has started distributing two online surveys to Linux User
Groups and Linux users in general, one asking primarily about home
computer use, the other about business use. They apparently don't plan
to release the results of their surveys, so we and other people in the
open source community are asking you to look at them and post your
answers and comments here and on other appropriate sites where, in
open source style, everyone can see them. Read on for more information
and links, and please help spread the word about these surveys; as far
as we know, this is the first time Microsoft has asked Linux users why
we use Linux instead of their products, and the more results, the
merrier. Author's Note: I'll reveal some of *my* answers to
Microsoft's questions in a comment I'll post shortly after this story
goes live, just to kick things off.
