Lithium ion battery recharges in one
minute
03/29/2005 08:50 PMToshiba Corp. has developed a lithium-ion battery the company said
features the short rechargeable time of capacitors and the energy
capacity of conventional lithium-ion batteries. Toshiba's new battery
can recharge 80 percent of the battery's energy capacity in one
minute, approximately 60 times faster than the typical Li-ion
batteries.
The energy density is 150 to 250 Wh (Watt-hour)/liter, equal to the
lower range of energy densities existing lithium ion batteries have.
Advanced Li-ion rechargeable batteries reach densities of 600 Wh/l.
"It should be the world first lithium ion battery that can be
charged in one minute. The battery has a big potential. It could be
used for mobile phones in the future, but we put the priority on
applications such as automobiles that require quick recharging time
and large cycle time," said Norio Takami, Laboratory leader of
Advanced Functional Materials laboratory at Toshiba's Corporate
Research and Development Center.

Lithium ion Battery Which Charges in One

03/30/2005 04:59 PMToshiba has developed a new Lithium-ion battery which charges up to
80% of it’s capacity in just 1 minute. Toshiba's prototype battery has a capacity of 600mAh and
measures.8mm thick, 62mm high and 35mm deep. It was demonstrated in
hard disc music player for about 10 minutes by charging 5 milliwatts
in 5 seconds. According to a Toshiba Lab spokesman, the
battery shows less than 1 percent deterioration in capacity after
1,000 cycles of discharging and recharging. The battery is planned to
be available in 2006. Here are more details from the eetimes.com.
Toshiba achieved the breakthrough by using nanoparticles of
several hundred nanometers coated uniformly on the negative electrode
and newly developed electrolytic solution. This stable formulation
does not react with lithium ions at the cathode in a manner that would
lower the battery's cycle time. The electrolytic solution and
nanoparticles enable large number of lithium ions move quickly to the
cathode and store in the particles in recharging mode. With
the stable electrolyte solution, the battery discharges 80 percent of
its capacity at minus 40 degrees centigrade, compared to 100 percent
discharge at 25 degrees centigrade for conventional Li-ion batteries.
In the high temperature operation, Toshiba reported that the capacity
deteriorates by only 5 percent at temperatures of 45 degrees
centigrade after 1,000 cycles of discharging and recharging.

03/29/2005 04:34 PMToshiba says it has developed a light and thin prototype battery that
recharges 80 percent of capacity in just a minute, and it will market
it commercially in 2006.
The development "makes long recharge times a thing of the past," the
company said in a statement to AFP. One minute is roughly 60 times
faster than typical lithium-ion batteries. The new battery measures 62
millimeters (2.48 inches) by 35 and is 3.8 millimetres thick. It also
has a long life, losing only one percent of capacity after 1,000
cycles of discharging and recharging and can operate at temperatures
as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit), the
company said.

ezTalker mini
ezTalker mini
03/17/2005 02:47 AMThe ezTalker mini from Tekkeon is a miniature cord-free headset
allowing for handsfree communication using a Bluetooth mobile phone
with a range up to 30 feet.
The ezTalker mini connects to any Bluetooth v1.1 mobile phone and
supports both headset and handsfree profiles and comes with a power
adapter, ezEarhook, 3 ezFit Earpieces in different sizes, and a User
Guide. The ezTalker mini is small, measuring only 0.85" x 2.1" x 1"
and weighing only 0.5 ounces (14g) making it comfortable to wear for
long periods of time. The unobtrusive optional ezEarhook for
over-the-ear, hands-free communication, can be added or removed from
the headset and can be worn on either ear or simply not at all (Spymac
preferred using the ezTalker mini without the earhook).
Using the headset is simple and straightforward and can be done by
charging the headset, pairing it with the phone and fitting the
headset with the appropriately sized ear piece or attaching the
earhook. The pairing process was straightforward and took less than a
minute.
Spymac was incredibly impressed with the headset's sound quality and
performance. The ezTalker mini provides clear, high quality
communication and is equipped with a chip antenna to ensure high
quality audio. The in-ear speaker sits comfortably inside the ear to
precisely direct sound to the ear canal, and the headset's
unidirectional microphone is positioned to accurately direct speech,
while minimizing background noise. Compared to Motorola's Bluetooth
Headset, there really is no comparison as the ezTalker sounds better
to the user and doesn't pick up the background noise, making for
clear, concise conversation.
The ezTalker mini features a rechargeable lithium polymer battery that
can be charged by plugging the power adapter directly into the
headset. The headset's battery will provide 5 hours of talk time and
120 hours of standby time. According to Tekkeon, charging time is
approximately 2 hours. The power adapter is slim and compact compared
to other Bluetooth headset power adapters and has a longer cord,
measuring 6 feet compared to the typical 3 foot cords on other
Bluetooth headset power adapters.
The headset features rubber plug cover for the power adapter jack,
easy access to volume and mute and last number redial at the side of
the headset, a multifunction button gives one-touch access to call
answer, call end, call reject, last number redial, voice-activated
dialing and power. There are also several visual and audible
indicators to let the user know if the headset is on or if the battery
is getting low.
The ezTalker mini is ebony and silver and ships within 48 hours from
Tekkeon's online store for $79.99.
Pros:
Excellent speaker sound
Eliminates background noise
Small, lightweight, comfortable
Removable earhook
Cons:
No hold button

Acon Power Runner PR-2500 iPod Battery
Acon Power Runner PR-2500 iPod Battery
07/20/2004 02:29 PM
Although I don't see it on their website anywhere yet
(and it may not even ever make it to the States), Taiwanese peripheral
manufacturer Acon (makers of the "Cable Ass'y") has a new addition to
their Power Runner line, the PR-2500, designed specifically for the
Apple iPod. There are other external, rechargeable battery packs for
the iPod -- and certainly ones that are better looking -- if anyone
actually gets around to importing this one, it might be worth a
glance. The 14-hour battery life and LED charge-state indicators are
especially nice.
