The latest online version of the PHP Manual contains a completely reorganized Installation and Configuration part, which is now splitted up by platforms and servers to ease your first steps with PHP. The manual Windows installation instructions are completely revised, and now suggest you to set environment variables instead of moving files. This way upgrades and configuration changes become more easier. Black Box Voting: Diebold GEMS central tabulator contains a stunning security hole. Manipulation technique found in the Diebold central tabulator -- 1,000 of these systems are in place, and they count up to two million votes at a time. By entering a 2-digit code in a hidden location, a second set of votes is created. This set of votes can be changed, so that it no longer matches the correct votes. The voting system will then read the totals from the bogus vote set. It takes only seconds to change the votes, and to date not a single location in the U.S. has implemented security measures to fully mitigate the risks.

If this is true, it's perhaps the worst news yet in a saga that is monumentally scary: the prospect that voting machines aren't just flawed, but perhaps open to direct tampering. No one should trust Diebold to begin with, given its woeful security record, a track record that should have disqualified it entirely from selling voting machines. But if this is proved out -- and where are the authorities, anyway? -- it ought to be the last straw.

Finnish Red Cross has made a Java cell phone program ("midlet" for the technically inclined) which contains the most basic first aid instructions in an easy-to-follow format with pictures. The instructions are in Finnish only, but you can get yours by texting "LATAA7 SPR ENSIAPU7" to number 17116. You need to have WAP settings in place to make the download. I took a quick look at it and it certainly seems like something I'm going to keep on my phone for a long time.

(Though, be warned, the midlet costs 7€! Something that which Helsingin Sanomat completely forgets to mention (boo hiss, this is stupid), but that is declared on Red Cross's page...)

Just in time for the holidays, I would say.
