Company Claims Working Artificial Cortex

Company Claims Working Artificial Cortex 07/19/2004 01:29 PM
Artificial Development claims to have developed a working "Autonomous Cognitive Model" (ACM) based on the human cortex. They say this AI has a persona named "Kjell" (after one of Alan Turing's lovers) and was activated in late June. Kjell is said to have a working frontal cortex, motor, and somatosensory areas but does not yet have visual or auditory cortex areas. The hippocampus, basal ganglia and thalamic systems are also "under development". The system is composed of 20 billion neurons capable of 20 trillion connections. It runs on a Linux-based hardware cluster of 500 dual-CPU nodes with a total of 1 terabyte of RAM and 200 terabytes of storage. They claim the system is 10,000 times larger than any previous attempt at creating AI and rivals the complexity of mammalian brains.

Time Warner Threatens To Sue DSL Company
Who Claims Speed Advantage

Time Warner Threatens To Sue DSL Company
Who Claims Speed Advantage
08/18/2004 02:38 PM
Last year, we noted the differentiation strategies between cable and DSL firms in the US. The DSL companies decided to start dropping their prices to entice those who didn't want to pay extra for cable broadband. Meanwhile, the cable companies believed they could keep their prices high, while claiming a speed advantage. It seemed obvious that DSL would win that battle -- as they did. The difference in speed is minimal (though, important to some), but the pricing differential was clear. Besides, as speeds kept improving, DSL companies could claim they were catching up. Now, Broadband Reports has the story of a DSL provider in Maine who conducted a study saying that their DSL was faster than competitor Time Warner's cable broadband. Time Warner agreed to take part in the study, but later pulled out -- questioning the methodology. The end result, not surprisingly, was that the study found the DSL offering was faster than cable. Time Warner disagrees... to the point that they're threatening to sue the DSL provider for false advertising. Unfortunately, the details aren't entirely clear. While it certainly does have the appearance of Time Warner being a "sore loser," the methodology really does matter in a case like this. If the study was only conducted with DSL customers who are very close to the CO, then it's quite likely they could get speeds higher than cable. However, it would be dishonest to suggest that all DSL customers could reach those same levels. Unfortunately, the article doesn't get into that level of detail.

Company Claims Orkut Stole Orkut Code

Company Claims Orkut Stole Orkut Code 06/30/2004 07:19 PM
It's not like it's particularly difficult to write a social networking systems. These days, at the rate new ones are coming out, it practically seems like a typical first year CS student's project. Still, a company named Affinity Engines that builds social networking products for universities (that just so happens to have been founded by Orkut Buyukkokten - the creator of orkut.com) is now suing Google for stealing their code. From the article, it sounds like they have a pretty solid claim. First, it's obvious that Orkut had access to the code. He even continued to work on it while he was at Google. According to the lawsuit he promised repeatedly that he wasn't going to work on a similar app for Google, but then did so anyway. The real damaging point, however, is that Affinity Engines claims they've found nine identical bugs in Orkut that are also in their own system -- which certainly makes it quite likely the basic code is the same.

Energy Dreams and Energy Realities

Energy Dreams and Energy Realities 06/19/2004 03:13 PM
Interesting dissection of US energy/environmental politics and policy along conservative/liberal lines: "We are, it seems, always in some kind of energy crisis, real or imagined. Some worry that our major sources of energy are about to run out. Some despair that our energy-hungry civilization is destroying the natural world. Some believe our quest for energy is driving us into unnecessary wars and unsavory alliances. And some lament that excessive regulations on energy development are crippling the American way of life. When it comes to energy politics, there is no shortage of alarmism, conservative and liberal alike." The conclusion was sorta weak tho, I thought :D [via J. Orlin Grabbe - NSFW!]
