Sony VAIO VGN-X505VP Review 06/03/2004 10:20 AM

Trusted Reviews absolutely gushes over the Sony VAIO VGN-X505VP, and really, how can you blame them? The X505VP is Sony's super-slim ultra-portable, just 21mm at its thickest and 11mm at its thinnest ends. With a 1.1GHz Pentium M, 512 MB RAM, a bundle of extra hardware including a multi-format memory card reader, DVD burner, and carrying case, as well as included (but not integrated) 802.11g, there's really not questioning the fact that the X505 is one of the world's most desirable laptops. If I had a spare $3,700 around that I hadn't already allocated for eight balls, the wafer thin mint would already be mine.

Sony VAIO PCG-FR415S Review 04/13/2004 08:46 AM
JOEL JOHNSON -- Sony's VAIO PCG-FR415S is a middle- to low-end laptop with a bizarre mix of features. It has fairly sturdy insides, with a 2.8GHz P4 and a DVD burner, but stumbles with a 1024 by 768 display and a weak-kneed graphics chipset. That makes sense, because it's a...

Sony HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Review

Sony HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Review 07/12/2004 10:34 AM

hmpa1_review.jpg imageI should warn you: I'm sort of lukewarm on portable video players altogether. I don't commute to work, and when I did, there was enough jostling and train swapping to make anything that required focused attention, like reading books or watching video, a fractured and annoying experience. But still, there is an opportunity for a video player like the HMP-A1 to be useful -- I just don't think this would be the one I would buy.

Sony DCR-HC40 MiniDV Camcorder Review

Sony DCR-HC40 MiniDV Camcorder Review 06/21/2004 10:31 AM

sony_dcr-hc40.jpg imagePC Mag reviews the Sony DCR-HC40 MiniDV camcorder, and despite some issues with the touch-screen controls, find the most important stuff -- image quality, battery life, and price -- to be very strong for a $700 camera. It has "intelligent accessory shoes" that can power an optional light or microphone, and it happens to have an internal lens cover, something I find highly appealing in the smaller throw-and-go camera segment. Still image cameras almost all have internal lens covers these days; I don't know why we expect anything different from camcorders.

Sony VAIO U50 Review: Awful Laptop,
Great PDA
06/28/2004 09:35 PM

sony_u50_review.jpg imageIt catches eyes, that's for sure. I had forgotten to load the Sony VAIO U50 with any software before our flight home to Kansas City for the weekend, but since an unexpected storm front was blowing in from the north, we had almost two hours to kill while our plane sat, stranded on the tarmac of LaGuardia. Even scrolling through empty file systems was better than the airline magazine.

"Excuse me," said the man sitting next to me, and I turned too fast to respond, because I knew he had been staring. "What exactly is that thing, and can you play Spider Solitaire on it?"

Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison

Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison 06/09/2004 09:10 AM

pocket_vs_ipod.jpg imageIf you want to stumble through the Babelfish translation, AV Watch Japan has a review of the Sony VAIO Pocket, the hard disk-based music player that's getting the most buzz as Sony's attempt to create an iPod-killer. Among other things, they compare sizes (!), and really that battery nodule on the back of the VAIO Pocket does it a disservice in pictures -- it's not nearly as big as it seems. Of course, the chink in the VAIO Pocket's armor is its inability to play any format but Sony's proprietary ATRAC3, meaning every song you want to copy to the VAIO Pocket has to be converted. 20GB of conversion is going to be sucky, but manageable; it's really just the principle of the thing (even Apple, head up their AAC, lets the iPod play MP3).

Exhaustive Review of Sony Ericsson GC82
EDGE PC Card
04/16/2004 01:12 PM
Brian Jepson reviews the Sony Ericsson EDGE card to the nth degree, including configuration advice and photos: This in-depth, multi-page review at Jiwire (our content partner) tells the results of Brian's real-world testing of EDGE service over AT&T Wireless's network in several cities, provides an explanation of how EDGE works (and why performance might vary), and is fully illustrated with screen captures and photos. Brian also provides the information you need to use the card with Mac OS X and Linux, which aren't directly supported by Sony Ericsson. A small download, a few code changes, recompile, and voila! You've got high-speed cell data on unsupported computers. While $80 a month may seem high for a consumer-level price, for business people who need ubiquitous data access, EDGE is really the fastest best option when it works. By January 2005, Verizon Wireless will have its 1xEvDO in potentially dozens of cities, while AT&T Wireless should have debuted UMTS in four or five towns....

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,
Including Sony T3 (Rawr!)
08/30/2004 09:56 AM

Sony_DSC-T3.jpg imageGott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar 4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a 7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.

The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the day.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AM
Has anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does, Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over a month after Sony announced plans to build out retail stores more for advertising than for sales, Samsung plans to do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for advertising that they won't sell you anything at the store. It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage isn't enough to scare them off.

Waterfield Bags launched a SleeveCase designed specifically for the Mac Mini within weeks of the official Apple announcement. In its default configuration as I received it, the SleeveCase is merely what it claims to be, a case into which a Mac Mini will fit. However, Waterfield offers a configuration with a detachable shoulder strap. (read the review) This makes it very comparable to the eM2 bag we reviewed a few weeks ago...
