03/28/2005 03:27 AMWhen you are on the road preparing for that big meeting you are only
as good as the content of your briefcase allows. Wouldn’t it be great
to carry thousands of articles and creative examples on every business
trip for your reference when necessary? Unfortunately commuter
flights limit you to one piece of carry-on and a four-drawer aluminum
file cabinet won’t match your Tumi Garment bag. [PRWEB Mar 28, 2005]

Smart Badges For Better Meetings
Smart Badges For Better Meetings
11/13/2003 12:28 PMRoland Piquepaille
writes
"In an article to appear on November 15, the New Scientist tells us
that the 500 attendants of the last Pop!Tech conference were carrying
intelligent badges to put around their necks. EurekAlert! has released
a preview of this article, "Hello, will you be my friend?" These nTAGs, distributed by the nTAG Interactive company, contained
personal details about their wearers. And as the nTags can communicate
with each other via infrared links, they are able to send alerts when
they see a good match between two owners. This doesn't come up cheap:
expect $40 to $100 per badge per day, depending on the event. More
details and references are available on my blog
which also includes pictures. "

The only watch that's also a weapon- it shoots BBs, dried

This stainless steel watch will be the envy of the classroom or the
meeting room. Use it to "wake-up" those sleepy headed co-workers and
classmates. When they look around to see who's been pelting them with
spitballs, you'll just be casually checking the

METS Meetings Build Support
METS Meetings Build Support
06/06/2004 06:40 AMMETS Meetings Build Supporthttp://www.libra
ryjournal.com/article/CA415392Last month about 100
librarians gathered for the second METS (Metadata Encoding and
Transmission Standard) meeting to discuss strategies for implementing
the emerging standard. METS provides a way to assemble all the
relevant files and metadata associated with a digital object,
including rights information and information about how the item was
digitized. Once consolidated into a package, the digital object can
then be shared with other libraries. The METS standard can be used for
text material of course, but also for images, audio and video files
and even non-digitized objects such as print books. Discussions at the
April meeting focused on several unresolved issues surrounding the
standard. One is whether the International Federation of Library
Associations and Institutions' "Functional Requirements of
Bibliographic Records" would have an impact on the METS standard. The
group also discussed whether MPEG-21, an emerging standard that
includes a Digital Item Declaration Language, would be better suited
to libraries' needs. Whether METS becomes the common standard among
libraries or MPEG-21, it was agreed that libraries need a way to
capture all the files and metadata associated with the objects in
their collections in a format that can be easily shared. Another METS
meeting is slated for July 12, to be held at the British Library. For
more information on that meeting, click

Smarter Than Me
Smarter Than Me
12/29/2003 11:44 PMSometimes I'm accused of being "smart," which bothers me since I don't
know what it means. It's a comparative label: if this one is smart,
then others are equally smart, smarter, or less smart. Yet all
generalizations are false, all comparisons fail. There's no way to
measure these things, not really. It's a bogus idea.
That's not exactly right. I quickly identify folks smarter than me,
but it's not empirical, just a cocktail party chat I have with myself.
Probably...

Smarter Than the CEO
Smarter Than the CEO
05/31/2004 05:26 AMSuccess, most corporations assume, depends on the efforts of a few
superlative individuals. As a result, they treat their CEOs as
superheroes. In doing so, firms are neglecting their most valuable
resource: the collective intelligence of the organization as a whole.

Tinderbox Keeps Getting Smarter
Tinderbox Keeps Getting Smarter
03/22/2005 04:58 PMMatt Neuburg (~210 words)
Tinderbox Keeps Getting
Smarter -- Eastgate Systems' Tinderbox has been upgraded to
version 2.4. Tinderbox (see my review in TidBITS-651
A>) is a superb way to create heavily hyperlinked text; text snippets
are stored in a hierarchical structure and can be exported as Web
pages. I used Tinderbox to create the online help for the Perl editor
Affrus, which blogger John Gruber has called "the finest software
documentation," in part because it is "cross-linked out the
ying-yang." Tinderbox 2.4 makes outlines smarter by permitting
any entry to have a rule for updating itself periodically; for
example, if you're using Tinderbox to maintain a to-do list, a parent
item (representing a category or group of tasks) might have a rule
that its "completed" attribute should be true if and only if
the "completed" attribute of all its children (the actual
tasks) is true. There are also many small bug fixes and aesthetic
tweaks, and Tinderbox's Web-page export continues to evolve strongly.
Tinderbox runs in both the classic Mac OS (Mac OS 9.2 recommended) and
Mac OS X 10.0 and later. Tinderbox costs $165, plus $70 annually for
free updates. A demo version is available for download. [MAN]
