911 Call Centers Won't Be Ready For E911 Deadline

911 Call Centers Won't Be Ready For E911
Deadline
02/10/2004 04:48 AM

Last year we had a story about how the money that NY was supposedly collecting for E911 service (so police have the ability to locate mobile phone callers), was instead put into "dry cleaning bills, ballpoint pens, travel, car leases, grounds maintenance for precincts and winter boots." In response to this revelation, a bill was introduced in Congress to give more money to governments that don't divert the funds. You read that right, the plan to save the system was to give more money to governments that actually do what they're supposed to - rather than throwing away money on other things. So, is it really any surprise to find out now that a new study shows that 50% of all 911 emergency call centers won't be ready in time for the deadline? Apparently, they need more money. Perhaps if they hadn't squandered the money specifically earmarked for this purpose there wouldn't be a problem. It sounds like many of the call centers haven't even started the process of getting ready, despite knowing about the deadline for many years. The wireless carriers have fulfilled their end of the bargain and should all be ready when the December 31, 2005 deadline hits. It's just the local governments that have been ignoring the mandate in favor of spending money elsewhere. In the meantime, don't be surprised if the E911 fees on your mobile phone bill go up as the local governments need to make back all the money that went into those boots and ballpoint pens. Hope those new boots are comfy and the ballpoint pens write smoothly.

Get Ready To Call iTunes

Get Ready To Call iTunes 12/19/2004 03:11 PM
Apple Computer and Motorola could soon show us the mobile phone they are developing to play music purchased from Apple's iTunes online music store. "We've said we have something coming on this in the first half of 2005 and we're definitely on schedule for that. Hopefully you'll be able to see more about it soon," says Eddy Cue, vice president in charge of applications at Apple

If the phone is as far along as Cue suggests, then Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs would be likely to announce it during his annual keynote speech at MacWorld Expo, scheduled for Jan. 11, 2005 in San Francisco. In true Apple style, Cue declined to say whether Jobs will indeed address the phone at that event. "What we've talked about is a something that is valuable for the mass market," Cue says. "It has to be a phone in the middle-tier of the market, not a $500-tier phone. It has to be very seamless to use. And we're very happy with the results." .

New E911 Service May Actually Delay
Phone Calls To 911
06/17/2004 05:16 AM
There's been an ongoing struggle to get the various wireless carriers to offer E911 functionality, so that police can quickly determine the location of a caller. However, a glitch in the way Verizon Wireless set up their E911 system means that some callers may experience a series of two second delays when calling 911 as the phone tries to pinpoint the callers location. As you might imagine, a two second delay on an emergency call can be quite a lot. The problem is unlikely to happen in most situations - only in cases where it's difficult for the GPS to get a read on the location. However, that probably isn't too comforting to the few people it will impact. Verizon is working to fix the problem. Sprint is quoted as saying they fixed this same problem last year, so it's obviously not a new issue. This seems like the type of issue you would try to solve as early as possible.

Mind some dumb-ass questions about cell phone location technology and policy for something I'm writing? I'm having trouble finding a site on the Web that talks about this at a sufficient level of ignorance. I understand that by 2005, 95% of cell phones in the US need to be able to broadcast their location with an accuracy of 50-150m. This is part of the FCC's e911 ("Enhanced 911") act. Here's what I don't understand: 1. The wireless carriers are required to track that information only if you make a 911 call. But will my cell phone be broadcasting its location...

Feds Launch Bioinformatics Centers By Michael Hardy

Feds Launch Bioinformatics Centers - Institute contracts for databases and portals to compile info on diseases. Officials at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) are enlisting private companies and universities to help make data available about disease-causing organisms. Under eight five-year contracts, companies and academic institutions will develop databases and Web portals to compile information about a small number of pathogens, the germs that cause disease. Some of the pathogens are considered possible bioterrorism agents, while others are public health concerns unrelated to terrorism. With NIAID footing the bill, the data will be freely available to scientists, said Valentina Di Francesco, bioinformatics program director in NIAID's Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Officials at NIAID, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, have awarded seven Bioinformatics Resource Center (BRC) contracts, and one more is in negotiations, she said. This has been added to Biological Informatics Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

It's not a truck stop, it's a travel center, and its 150-plus locations will be wireless by July: Travel Centers combine truck stop features with RV and auto drivers needs, and they'll add Wi-Fi to the mix--it's a must have for any place in its category now. The 40 company-owned stores are already unwired; the franchisees will be ready to go by July 3. Service will cost $1.49 for an hour, $4.49 for 24 hours starting at the time of purchase, $22.49 for two months, and $169.99 per year. These longer plans are designed truckers to ensure brand loyalty. Diesel-fuel buyers can cash in RoadKing Club points they earn from buying gas against the Wi-Fi service....
