Better Looking Robots

Better Looking Robots

Better Looking Robots 02/10/2004 03:00 AM

As robot technology continues to improve, it's becoming possible to give our robots much more interesting appearances. For some designers, like David Hanson this means exploring the uncanny valley where robots become androids that look almost (but not quite) human. For others designers, like White Box Robotics, this means the chance to make robots that look as good as any we've seen in Star Wars. David Hanson is making news again this week in the Deleware News Journal and Newsday.com. The White Box Robotics 912 HMV, meanwhile, was covered today by an ABC News SCI/Tech article.

Using PHP instead of robots.txt

Using PHP instead of robots.txt 04/14/2005 07:30 PM
PHP can be more than just a scripting language used for constructing dynamic Web pages at request time. One application is to use PHP integration with the Web server to record and potentially deal with security issues. Ken Coar raises eyebrows with his thoughts on using PHP scripts instead of normally static files like robots.txt

Sorry about the lack of robot news over the last week. The Robots.net server has moved to a new hosting location. We now have twice the bandwidth available as well as more reliable service. Other improvements to the site itself are in the works for the future. I have a quite a few backed-up stories that I'll try to post over the next few days to get the site caught up again. Better Robots Through Entomology

Better Robots Through Entomology 12/12/2003 09:01 PM
A new Georgia Tech Research News article describes the efforts of scientists to use automated animal movement analysis to improve robot interaction. As part of the BioTracking project, Georgia Tech researchers at the BORG Lab are developing several techniques for automatically tracking and modeling the movements of social insects such as ants and bees. By studying the sequence of motions of the insects, the researchers hope to reverse engineer the algorithms that drive them and implement those algorithms in software on simulators and actual robots. If you're interested in learning more about their plans, you may want to attend the International Workshop on the Mathematics and Algorithms of Social Insects Dec 15-17 at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

There have been several flying robots in the news lately. A Marine Corps News story describes their Wasp Micro Air Vehicle (MAV), a hand-launched robot plane with Kevlar wings and side-looking cameras. Another MAV being designed by Honeywell for DARPA is described in a News.com article. And, last, is an autonomous helicopter being developed at New Mexico State University's Rio-Robo Lab, described in an Albuquerque Tribune article and an earlier NMSU press release.

Should Robots Have Genders?

Should Robots Have Genders? 05/05/2004 05:10 PM
More human-like robots seem to be appearing all the time, and apparently it's now time to get down to the nitty gritty detail questions like whether or not robots should have a gender? Many of the new robots do have a gender that's assigned by their creators, while others end up with a de facto gender based on whoever is using it and how they feel about it. That last part (how people feel about it) is why some believe robots need to have a gender. In making the robots seem more human, it seems only natural to give them a gender that makes it even easier for humans to relate to the robot without feeling uncomfortable. Of course, that suggests that we can only relate to one another based on our gender, which doesn't seem quite right.

Dances with Robots

Dances with Robots 02/10/2004 03:00 AM
MIT student Sommer Gentry and her husband Dorry Segev have developed a highly evolved system of robot communication and control via haptic signaling. The system is better known as "Swing Dancing". They started with two human swing dancers. From there they progressed to "Jedi Swing Dancing" in which two blindfolding humans dance (thus proving that haptic communication alone is sufficient for human-to-human dancing). Now they've progress to a human-robot dance in which the human communicates with a robot arm haptically. The robot or the human can lead. Read more in the MIT press release. Or for the full story see Sommer's research papers on Haptic-only lead and follow dancing and related subjects.

Wearable Robots

Wearable Robots 06/14/2004 06:03 PM

Remember the scene in the first Alien movie where Ripley fights the Queen baddie using a semi-robotic lifting machine? Well, it looks like that technology is getting closer to real-world applications. Inventor Steven Jacobsen is s howing off a prototype of his device, and is working with robotics gurus Sarcos to make it a production reality.

Strap it on, go for a walk on the treadmill or up and down stairs while carrying a 90-kilogram load on your back, and it feels as if you’re carrying nothing, says Jacobsen. You can even balance on one foot with a person on your back and barely feel any more fatigued than if you were standing by yourself, he adds. The exoskeleton adds strength because it stays in parallel with the user’s legs and pushes on the ground.

Military uses seem to be first in line for this device, but I can think of lots of other uses for it in industry, construction, even in nursing homes — anywhere lifting and lifting-related injuries are involved. I don't think they'll have one ready for my backyard landscaping project though.

Ag Robots from UIUC

Ag Robots from UIUC 07/11/2004 08:29 PM
Agricultural robots are on the way, according to a recent press release from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. UICU agricultural engineer Tony Grift has been working on several farm robots including a tiny, $150 legged robot called the Ag Ant, designed to walk through crops looking for weeds. Grift and other researchers have also developed larger robots to test navigation and sensor technology in cornfields. Even stranger ideas are in the works, like a robot that could spit chemicals on plants like an ink-jet, preventing wasted chemicals typical of current crop spraying methods. Photos of some of Grift's farm robots can be found on Gizmodo and in Roland Piquepaille's blog. Grift has also advocated the use of Lego Mindstorm robots as an educational tool for agricultural students.

Will Robots Ever Become Conscious?

Will Robots Ever Become Conscious? 11/12/2003 01:31 PM
The New York Times has an aricle that asks, Can Robots Become Conscious? Well, I don't know, and neither do they, and neither does just about anyone else. It seems that before we can know whether robots can attain consciousness, we first have to figure out just what consciousness is. Then, and only then can we know if a robot has attained it. Some, like Hans Morevec, think humans are just a grand machine and if so we can someday build one. But others think humans and their consciousness could be more like something spiritual or a quantum effect or an electromagnetic field? And, if so, we have to figure out what that more is if we plan to simulate it. Perhaps robots already are conscious, just not at a level of consciousness that we consider truly conscious? Or perhaps, if we can just pass the Turing test, then that would be good enough? And, well, if we make a sentient being, what then?

Conscious robots?
