Online Games Of Skill vs. Online Games
Of Chance

Online Games Of Skill vs. Online Games
Of Chance
05/24/2004 04:40 AM
While the US has been notoriously tough on the idea of any online gambling in the US, there are a number of companies doing quite well in the somewhat "gray" area of online games of skill for money. These aren't games of chance, but still require players to put up money, and the winners go home with more than they put in. The difference, of course, is that the win is based (at least somewhat) on the skills of the players. However, this can be a very fine line. Most games involve a mix of skill and luck, and you can make the claim that classic gambling games like poker and blackjack require some amount of skill as well. Still, the online "games of skill" providers claim they're just like a typical sports association, like the US Tennis Association, that sets up tournaments and awards prizes to the winners - minus their own cut. Of course, they conveniently skip over the part about where the money comes from. With these online games, it is still a "pay to enter" sort of contest. Either way, it's not entirely clear how the legal issues will play out. Some states already bar such online games of skill, but many don't. Federal laws are still unclear, and the companies involved in this space are lobbying heavily to try to make the point that they should be allowed to continue where online gambling sites are forbidden.

MCE Updates QuickStream DV

MCE Updates QuickStream DV 08/19/2004 09:44 AM

quickstreamDV.jpg imageSo MCE Technologies has released a new version of its QuickStream DV, an external. ruggedized FireWire hard drive with a few tricks up its sleeve that makes it a useful companion to any DV camcorder. In fact, it pretty much removes the need for DV tape entirely by connecting directly to your camera's FireWire port and capturing video as you shoot it. The QuickStream DV also has built-in flash memory buffers which it uses for something called "SureCapture," which can save up to six seconds of DV video even when the QuickStream is in standby mode, giving it enough time to spin up its hard drive and start going. Then when you're done, remove the rechargable hard drive and hook it up to your PC or Mac and get all non-linear on it right then and there.

At prices starting around $600 for a 1.5-hour model and going up from there, the QuickStream DV isn't necessarily a solution for the average Sunday shooter quite yet. But for pros and semi-pros looking to remove tape from their rigs entirely, it looks like a really excellent way to go about it.

Flying Updates 12/21/2003 02:31 AM
I just realized that I've been remiss in updating my flying blog. I hadn't touched it at all during the month of December. After spending a bit of quality time with my log book and re-reading some of the recent club e-mail, I've added about five new entries. They cover everything from my DG-1000 checkout (and loops) to some scenic flying on the Wright Brother's 100th Anniversary earlier this week (pictures). It's been a good month of flying so...

Kinja launches

Kinja launches 04/09/2004 04:11 PM
Kinja, the Web app for reading weblogs that Meg and Nick have been working on for the past year +, has launched as a beta. It's still a bit rough around the edges (especially design-wise) and a little schizophrenic as to who/what it's targetted at, but it's neat to play around with. I like that it reads like a weblog...which is not the case with RSS readers...something I never liked... (with comments)

Kinja announcements 04/09/2004 04:06 PM

After 15 months in the making, I'm pleased to announce that Kinja, a new weblog reading tool, has launched today. We worked really hard on it and hope you'll check it out. On a personal note, I'm spending another month at Kinja and will be leaving at the end of April. I'm sure I'll have more to say about that in the future, but for now, check out Kinja and some assorted media coverage:
