TiVo and Netflix to Partner for
Downloadable Content?
09/06/2004 04:33 PM

Hey, guys. I'm sort of taking the day off from news - finishing up some freelance and doing a lot of behind-the-scenes catch up for Gizmodo - but this was just too interesting not to talk about. Newsweek is reporting that TiVo and NetFlix are planning on releasing a system that would allow subscribers of both services to download movies and television programs directly to their TiVos over broadband. There's no confirmation from the companies yet, but this could be huge. If they could figure out a way to let us take TiVoToGo onto mobile media devices, we could finally have an all-you-can-eat, legal video download option.

Both companies hope that the initiative will improve the interoperability between content creation and deployment systems as well as facilitate their mutual interest in developing standards for online learning technology. Users of the Content Resource Center will have access to Oracle's PartnerNetwork and Macromedia's Alliance partner program and get the opportunity to showcase their content to other members of the community.

Disney aping Pixar, going all-digital

Disney aping Pixar, going all-digital 11/10/2003 11:23 PM
Here's a great Slashdot article and discussion thread about Disney's abandonment of traditional, hand-drawn animation (which Disney has sworn, for years, it would never give up), in favor of 3D, computer-generated work.
Supposedly, all of their animators-- even staunch traditionalists such as Glenn Keane-- are being trained on 3D computer animation techniques. The last hand-drawn high-budget Disney feature scheduled for release is Home on the Range, which is due out next April. It appears that Disney is bowing to the supposed pressures of the market, even though the hand-drawn Lilo and Stitch was considered a success and the all-CG Dinosaur (done at Disney's now-defunct FX house The Secret Lab) was not. However, I believe there's another factor at work: Pixar's contract with Disney is set to expire soon, and the revered CG house has been making their own demands of Disney for the contract's renewal.

More Open Access To Digital Content

More Open Access To Digital Content 11/17/2003 04:17 AM
While things like MIT's OpenCourseWare and the new file sharing of lessons from the Berklee College of Music are getting all the attention, the well known iBiblio has been chugging away for over a decade, hosting all sorts of content for free. Years ago, it was known as SunSITE, when it was sponsored by Sun, but it eventually became iBiblio, and is hosted at UNC. It's mostly known for hosting open source software, but is expanding rapidly into all sorts of open content that people all over the world find useful. The guy who runs it seems to understand that there's a value in giving away things for free - and says that he's told folks in the music industry how they're making a mistake in calling music downloaders pirates. He points out that the people who go to the trouble of downloading music are the ones who are most interested in the music, and thus should be the people the recording industry is most excited about.

Sony Inks Korean Hotspot Deal for PSP 03/28/2005 07:50 AM

Wireless Watch Japan is reporting that Sony has partnered with Korean internet provider KT Corp. to offer internet service for the PSP via the company's 14,000 hotspots. It's not unexpected, of course, but that pretty much cinches it for any nay-sayers: the PSP is going to get a proper web browser, and soon. So not only will the PSP be a mobile gaming rig, an easy video platform, and an MP3 player, it'll also be a down-and-dirty internet machine. And once the keyboards begin hitting the shelf, we'll have ourselves quite a little unit for $250.
