New Robot Arm Installed on Space Station
New Robot Arm Installed on Space Station
02/01/2005 10:04 PMNASA has announced
that a 5 hour 28 minute space walk by two ISS astronauts has been
completed and the International Space
Station now has a new, external robot arm. The
double-jointed manipulator arm is known as ROKVISS
(Robotics Component
Verification on ISS) and is part of a German commercial experiment.
The device can operate in both an autonomous mode and in a
telepresence
mode. The primary purpose of the arm is to test the long-term
reliability of new, lightweight robotics components in space. A
Sci-Tech
article has more info on the new arm and also mentions that the
astronauts discoverd a mysterious, white, honeycomb-like substance
growing on the outside of the space station during their spacewalk
(yikes!). More info about
the ROKVISS arm itself can be found in a 12
page concept overview document (PDF format).

When it gets to dogs, this social
networking thing has gone to far
09/03/2004 04:57 AMToday I received an long 'zine email from David Weinberger, who
reminded me that he had set up a neighborhood on the fashionable new
geographically-based academia-powered social networking site,
i-Neighbors, so I went and checked out North Berkeley, the
neighborhood that I, slave to blog-fashion and still hoping that
somewhere, somehow, someday, I will find out what these social
networking sites are good for, had created after reading David's
initial post. To my great surprise I was no longer the only member of
the i-hood, quite a few other people had moved in. As I was checking
out their pages, I saw that one of them had a link with his pet's
name. I clicked and was taken to ... Dogster. Apparently this is old
news to many, but it was the first I had heard of it, and its
companion site, Catster. On one hand this makes sense. There may even
be a business model buried in there somewhere -- a lot of pet owners
are fanatical about their pets, as anyone who has recently followed
San Francisco politics and the battles between the dog owners vs. the
Natural Areas Program can attest. And they spend a lot of money --
Americans spent 32.4 billion dollars on their pets last year, and
upscale pet businesses are doing well. Or there may not be a business
here -- remember the sock puppet? Whatever the business rationale,
this is nuts. Social networking for pets? Give me a break. It is a
symptom, not a cause, but what does it say about what our priorities
are in this country? Nothing that sits well in my stomach....
Ferel Robot Dogs Sniff Out Pollution
Ferel Robot Dogs Sniff Out Pollution
05/03/2004 11:38 PMAlmost a year ago, we
first heard about Natalie
Jeremijenko and her ferel robot dogs.
Today, an
Ithaca
Journal article describes a recent visit by six of
Natalie's ferel robot dogs to Washington Park, Ithaca, New York
where they successfully sniffed out the source of some coal tar
pollution. Because their primary goal is educating the public about
pollution hazards, Natalie has taken to calling the robots "weapons of
mass instruction". She hopes to make the plans
simple enough that any high school student can download the
information,
upgrade their existing robot dog, and start sniffing out pollution in
their neighborhood.
RFID-Equipped Robot Guide Dogs
RFID-Equipped Robot Guide Dogs
02/01/2005 10:04 PMRoland Piquepaille writes,
"A professor in computer
science at Utah
State University (USU) is building robots to help people with
disabilities, according to a Utah
Statesman article. The story, which is more focused on the professor
than robotics, carries several anecdotes, such as an embarrassing
voice
recognition system. After a blind man cleared his throat, the robot
misinterpreted the sound as a sign that the man wanted to go to the
bathroom. Later, every time a man cleared his throat before speaking,
the robot changed directions and guided him to the restroom. The
project
at USU is far more ambitious. They want to design RFID-enabled robots
mounted on mobile carts which will welcome blind persons at the
entrance
of supermarkets and guide them through the store. I bet you'll never
find those carts at a Wal-Mart." For more on about these
RFID-equipped robots, check out Roland's latest blog entry
on the subject.

"Attorney General John D. Ashcroft yesterday urged nations...to fight
corruption, which is costing the world economy more than $2 trillion
every year." "Follow our moral lead," Ashcroft said. "Surely in your
own country you have a highly visible woman who is resented for her
success. I urge you to go after her with the full power of the law.
And God bless America."...

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
12/18/2003 12:58 PMIt took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be
able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated,
that some researchers are giving up on that idea and
using
Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs.
However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the
upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out
how to make a
robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at
points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking
start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a
slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a
start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the
robot run.
Social people don't need social

Social people don't need social
networking
12/14/2003 09:54 PMKevin Werbach points out that social networking sites like LinkedIn
and Tribe and so forth have very little to offer highly connected
people like Esther Dyson, who would nevertheless be a real asset to
the network:
Esther and Pierre don't need LinkedIn to reach pretty much anyone they
want to contact. Yet there are a whole lot of folks who want to reach
them, and don't have a personal connection to do so. So the service
worsens their email overload with little corresponding benefit.
LinkSocial Applications For Social Devices
Social Applications For Social Devices
07/13/2004 01:53 AMThe mobile phone, by its very nature is a "social" device. It's
designed to help connect you to someone else. While most of the early
efforts to create "mobile data" have come from a broadcast mindset
(delivery produced content to an audience), it looks like some are
finally realizing that mobile data apps need to be social to really
catch on. If they're not making use of the mobile phone for what it's
good for, then it's unlikely to get too much attention. MIT's Tech
Review has a good overview of a
variety of different "social" projects related to mobile
devices, from the ever popular "Dodgeball" mobile social
networking application to Fluidtime's dorm room washing machine SMS
scheduler (and negotiator, should you find out you need the machine
now and someone else has it booked). These are the types of
applications that really are the future of mobile phones -- and not
the ability to watch the latest reality TV series on your phone or to
receive a marketing message from Disney.

If you have PHP installed and you've loaded up 10.2.4 you've
probably noticed that PHP no longer works. By editing httpd.conf in
the following way I was able to get PHP back and running.
Disclaimer: I don't really know what I'm doing here, I'm just a
guy armed with BBEdit and some vague notions. Follow my lead at your
peril. That said:
- Open httpd.conf in the text editor of your choice.
- Find the following lines and uncomment them:
#LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so
#AddModule mod_php4.c
- Find this line:
Include /private/etc/httpd/users
- And add this line right after it:
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
- Save.
- Open your System Preferences, go to Sharing and restart your web
server.
PHP should be running again. At least, it is for me ;-)

traditional
