Evil tree cutters

Man, bad start on the day! At first I was upset because they were making an infernal noise at 7.30 or some such in the morning. I got up to check the noise ordinance just to find out that they are indeed allowed to make noise starting at 7am. This site says only up to 75db (if I read it right), except if they can't make less noise. While looking this up I got upset instead that no, they aren't...

Here's a chart showing the typical speed of various Hollwood chase-scene pursuers, from T-Rexii to Boeing 747s. There were many craptacular things to mock about The Dat After Tomorrow, but most among them was a chase scene in which the protagonists need to outrun ice. This would have been handy then.

VoIP interop: built-in or bolt-on?

VoIP interop: built-in or bolt-on? 09/15/2004 03:26 PM
Every couple of years, I wonder when voice/data integration envisioned in this 1994 BYTE cover story will finally materialize. Two years ago, I was trying out the Vonage system. This comment jumped out at me:
I spoke with the Vonage folks today about the prospects for getting direct access to the digitized voice or the SIP signalling. It's possible in theory, but in practice the packet headers are encrypted (a nice security precaution), and they haven't documented how to reproduce the decryption and packet assembly that currently happens inside the ATA 186. Right now, they're focused on building out a basic voice service. But they absolutely agree that lots of useful integration can, and eventually will, be done. [Jon Udell: Bellheads versus Netheads]
It caught my eye because lately I've been investigating Skype, which turns out to be far more proprietary than Vonage. It's true that massive adoption, such as Skype is now experiencing, has a way of trumping standards. It's also true that a viable voice-call alternative "that just works" is a necessary precursor to the new breed of voice-and-data applications that we need and want. But if cheaper calls aren't the endgame, and if it's the apps that ultimately matter most, then shouldn't the mechanisms for creating those apps be built in rather than bolted on? ...

Bolt, Beranek & Newman (BBN) Reborn

Bolt, Beranek & Newman (BBN) Reborn 02/15/2004 09:16 AM

The Boston Globe reports today on the spinout of BBN, an institution behind the birth and growth of the Internet, and the history of computing generally.  General Catalyst, Accel Partners and the BBN Technologies management team acquired the company from it's corporate parent, Verizon.

BBN employ's hundreds of world renowned scientists focused on fundamental research in communications and software technology.  Just as its work in the 1960s and 1970s helped give birth to things like TCP/IP, email, and IP routing, their current advanced research is pushing the limits of wireless computing, voice computing, distributed systems and networking, security technology and quantum computing.  Unlike other technology "think-tanks" (e.g. Xerox Parc), all of BBN's technology research is applied, mostly developed (like in the 60's and 70's) on contract from the US federal government.

Part of the mission of the "New BBN" is to more directly apply it's innovations in the commercial world.  As a member of the General Catalyst team, it will be exciting to work with this brilliant group of innovators.
