Michale sez, "Tripods are great for photography, but a pain in the ass
to carry. Everyone these days seems to be carrying water bottles
everywhere. So trust a Japanese company to combine the two to make a
really useful thing: A mount that makes a bottle filled with water or
soda a useful stable base for your digital camera."

Just the other day I was
commenting to a friend how infrequently the tripod mounts on most
low-end consumer cameras are ever used, because who ever packs a
tripod when they're running around with their tiny camera? This Bottle
Cap Tripod is a great solution, then, making it easy to throw together
a jerry-rigged tripod whenever you need one. And if you live in New
York, you can probably just pick up a bottle off the street. Not
perfect, but not bad for 10 bucks. (Thanks, Jon!)

After we mentioned that bottlecap tripod a couple
days ago, a few of your wrote in with your own DIY projects, and they
were all very nice and stuff but posting news is hard work and we sort
of, you know, forgot. But then Jake Ludington sent us this very well
put together HOWTO this morning, and then we forgotted less. And it's
probably the best DIY version we've yet seen; the addition of the
washer would seem to add a lot of extra stability. (Thanks to
everyone who sent in their versions!)

Source Tool
05/28/2004 01:48 AMThe Local Installation Source Tool is a wizard to help manage your
Local Installation Source (LIS) on computers running Microsoft Office
2003. The LIS Tool allows you to enable or disable LIS, and to move
the MsoCache folder to a new volume. This download is intended for use
by customers and network administrators with LIS issues who contact
Microsoft Product Support Services.
Local Installation Source is a Setup feature. When a user installs
Microsoft Office 2003 from a CD or a compressed CD image on the
network, Setup copies any required installation files to a hidden
folder on the local computer. Microsoft Windows Installer uses this
local installation source to install Office, and the local source
remains available for repairing, reinstalling or updating Office later
on. Users can install features on demand or run Setup in maintenance
mode to add new features without their original media.
A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners
A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners
02/01/2005 08:53 PMApple finally went and released an inexpensive computer. With the
advent of the Mac mini, some Windows and Linux users who have been
curious about Mac OS X but turned off by Apple's high prices have
finally bit the bullet and ordered a mini.
Trying an unfamiliar operating system can be irritating at times.
Things are not where you expect them to be, the GUI is different, and
connecting to servers and other PCs can be frustrating. Hence the
mini-guide.
This is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to all
things OS X. Its purpose is to help those new to the operating system
do simple things, like use a Windows printer, connect to a network
share, and figure out what the key with the funny-looking squiggle on
it next to the spacebar does (or even use your PC keyboard with a
Mac). So if you're an "adder" and are feeling a bit out of sorts,
check out our guide.

A perfect day
A perfect day
03/11/2003 01:59 PMAn extremely rare personal entry. Politics and the state of the
economy were getting me down, and the kid was out of school, so we
decided to take the day off. I spent most of today on a gorgeous hike
in
Wildcat
Canyon, only 20 minutes away by car from my house. Up and down a
thousand feet a couple of times on a six mile loop trail, with
beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Mt. Tamalpais, Carquinez
Straits, and the San Pablo reservoir, as well as not so beautiful
views of the Richmond refineries. The plum and cherry trees on the
approaches were blossoming, and the hillsides were Irish green and
dotted with orange California poppies. Hawks were floating over the
hills, trying to catch the ground squirrels scurrying from burrow to
burrow. The kid got to get up close to cows starting to shed their
winter coats, and had the joy of taking a short cut all by himself
(hopefully not noticing dad keeping an eye on him from the rear
quarter). It was beautiful, and just what my soul needed. A perfect
spring day, a perfect way to spend a day. This is why I live in the
Bay Area, and put up with the incredibly expensive housing, jammed
traffic, and lousy public schools.
Then spent the evening blogging hour(s) playing with my weblogs. Read
some great stories at the
preacher's place. Spiffied
up my linklog and turned it into its own separate weblog,
The Midnight Blog. Added Meg's
cool yellow background for links. Played with the stylesheets,
messed things up and backed out of my changes. Bought a new domain
name (more on that later). Didn't check my email, which I am behind
on. Tried not to read any political news (failed). Except for the
latter, and for the hour the day is ending at, a perfect day.
