“You can learn a lot from a microbe. Right now, a tiny critter from the Dead Sea is teaching scientists new things about biotechnology, cancer, possible life on other worlds. And that’s just for starters: This microbe, called Halobacterium, may hold the key to protecting astronauts from one of the greatest threats they would face during a mission to Mars: space radiation. The harsh radiation of interplanetary space can penetrate astronauts’ bodies, damaging the DNA…

Let me on survivor!!! Oh the lack of justice! Canadians make up 10% of the Survivor audience and yet the show doesn't want to allow canadians to be on the show. This young courageous man wants to change the rules, and he thinks he qualifies to be a good survivor. Because after all 'Canadians live in igloos 50% of the year, so we're perfect for outdoor survival reality-tv shows '. So he's on a crusade to be the first canadian citizen on the show, and ask people to sign his petition.

BBC war correspondent Stuart Hughes' courageous, first-person blog testimonial on surviving a land mine accident in Iraq brought home the personal reality of war to readers worldwide. At left, a snapshot of Stuart taken in the hospital, as he recovered from the loss of his leg earlier this year.

Stuart is now traveling to Cambodia and reporting -- throu gh the BBC and through his blog -- on the human impact of mines, during conflicts and long after the conflicts end. He writes to BoingBoing:

"Greetings from London. Me and my artificial leg have just returned from northwestern Cambodia, where I carried out my first experiments in videoblogging. You can view my efforts on my blog here. See what you think!"

VoIP - Plan A vs Plan B

VoIP - Plan A vs Plan B 03/06/2004 01:56 AM
2003 was a remarkable year in the US for voice over the internet (VoIP). If you needed a label for the events of the year, "Collapse of Denial" would be a good one -- after a long period of relative inaction, the FCC and the state regulators are suddenly pushing hard for a regulatory framework. The question is no longer whether voice is going to become an internet application, but when. "When" could still be a very long time, however. The incumbent local phone companies -- Verizon, SBC, BellSouth and Qwest -- have various degrees of interest in VoIP, but are loathe to embrace it quickly or completely, because doing so means admitting to everyone -- shareholders, regulators, customers -- that both monopoly control and artificially high voice revenues are going away. (The fact that this is true does not much lessen the pain of saying so.) As a result, they will likely try to convince regulatory agencies, both the FCC and the states', to burden competitive VoIP firms like Vonage with additional costs and rules, while delaying their own offerings. Complicating this de facto Plan A, however, is the fact that VoIP isn't a service, it's just a set of protocols, meaning that competitors don't have to buy into Plan A to deploy it. If Plan A is "Replace the phone system slowly and from within," Plan B is far more radical: "Replace the phone system. Period." - More at http://www.shirky.com/writings/voip_a_b.txt

Wi-Fi Hits Marietta

Wi-Fi Hits Marietta 02/11/2004 10:56 AM
Another story in the ongoing saga of Wi-Fi expansion in public spaces: When Wi-Fi starts to hit a town -- in this case, Marietta, Georgia -- it's like electricity or phone service first getting turned on. But more so: people now know the context for what public space Wi-Fi could mean, and many individuals and businesses in every community are already using Wi-Fi for their local networks. The anticipation and expectation is quite high. Eventually, it will be just another technology, but it's still fresh and sparkling in many parts of the U.S. and the rest of the world....

PHP 5 Hits The Street

PHP 5 Hits The Street 07/14/2004 10:09 AM

PHP version 5.0.0 has now officially been released, bringing a large number of long-overdue changes to PHP.

  • The Zend Engine II with a new object model and dozens of new features.
  • XML support has been completely redone in PHP 5, all extensions are now focused around the excellent libxml2 library (http://www.xmlsoft.org/).
  • A new SimpleXML extension for easily accessing and manipulating XML as
PHP objects. It can also interface with the DOM extension and vice-versa.

  • A brand new built-in SOAP extension for interoperability with Web Services.

  • A new MySQL extension named MySQLi for developers using MySQL 4.1 and later.
This new extension includes an object-oriented interface in addition to
a traditional interface; as well as support for many of MySQL's new features,
    such as prepared statements.

  • SQLite has been bundled with PHP. For more information on SQLite,
    please visit their website.

  • Streams have been greatly improved, including the ability to access
    low-level socket operations on streams.

  • And lots more...

The biggest improvements are the chan ges to Zend, the core of PHP, that makes PHP a full-fledged OO language now. Features like private, static, abstract, and final methods, as well as the option to (somewhat) strongly type variables, mean that PHP can now be used to build serious object models. When using OO techniques in PHP 4, I tended to run into the barriers caused by these missing features, and it always felt like the language was trying to push me into writing spaghetti code. Sadly, still no schema support.
