Disney buries Moore's new movie to save
its tax-breaks
05/05/2004 01:18 AMDisney has killed the distribution of Michael Moore's new movie,
Farenheit 911, which traces the links between the Bush family and
Saudis like Osama bin Laden.
Mr. Moore's agent, Ari Emanuel, said Michael D. Eisner, Disney's chief
executive, asked him last spring to pull out of the deal with Miramax.
Mr. Emanuel said Mr. Eisner expressed particular concern that it would
endanger tax breaks Disney receives for its theme park, hotels and
other ventures in Florida, where Mr. Bush's brother, Jeb, is governor.
"Michael Eisner asked me not to sell this movie to Harvey Weinstein;
that doesn't mean I listened to him," Mr. Emanuel said. "He definitely
indicated there were tax incentives he was getting for the Disney
corporation and that's why he didn't want me to sell it to Miramax. He
didn't want a Disney company involved."

Eyes on the Prize rightsholders: teacher
may not screen our movie to kids
02/01/2005 08:37 PMCory Doctorow:
This is shameful. From the Downhill Battle blog:
The teacher who was planning a February 8th screening of Eyes on the
Prize in Vienna, VA for students and community members has been forced
to cancel after a threat of lawsuit from the "licensee level". We
absolutely cannot believe this - we had never anticipated that anyone
would try to stop students and community members from watching a film
about the Civil Rights Movement. Apparently, the law firm that
contacted them says that the school district does not have the proper
licenses. This is really unbelievable-- if there is any fair use, free
speech right at all, it applies to screenings of a historical
documentary in a school (wikipedia on fair use). This is a public
screening in an educational, non-commercial, one-time use setting.
Messing with a school district in Virginia is a whole different
ballgame, don't you think?

Kodak adds wireless printer dock, new
digital camera
08/04/2004 08:21 AMKodak has introduced the
Printer Dock Plus, which can wirelessly
accept pictures from a cell phone with its built-in infrared
capability as well as connect to your computer via a USB port for
printing, and a new EasyShare camera,
CX 7525, a 5 megapixel model with 3x optical/5x digital zoom,
nine scene and color modes, the ability to capture MPEG-4 video clips
at VGA (640 x 480, 13fps) or QVGA (320 x 240, 20fps) resolution and
more. Printer Dock Plus (US$199.99) offers a one-touch auto-enhance
feature that brightens pictures before printing, a built-in reader for
SD/MMC memory cards and compatibility with PictBridge-enabled cameras,
with the ability to charge their batteries while connected. An
optional 8-in-1 Kodak card reader expands the types of memory cards it
accepts. The new printer dock works with Mac OS X v10.2 or higher and
requires 128MB RAM and 200MB hard drive space; it will be available in
September.
