CoffeeGeek - Above and Beyond - Grower
Relationships
02/10/2004 02:54 AM

http://www.coffeegeek.com/opinions/ethicalbean/01-28-2004 There's a lot of talk in the coffee world about being responsible. There's an environmental responsibility to protect forests and birds. There's an ethical responsibility to sell quality coffees. But the biggest responsibility seems to be that of a social responsibility, one that ensures that coffee farmers and their families receive respect, recognition and fair wages for their work. Of course, there are many organizations...

Datamining the relationships in your own

Steven Johnson reports on new software that analyzes your email and figures out your social network.
No doubt you've experienced these two types of networks in your own life, many times over. The karass is that group of friends from college who have helped one another's careers in a hundred subtle ways over the years; the granfalloon is the marketing department at your firm, where everyone has a meticulously defined place on the org chart but nothing ever gets done. When you find yourself in a karass, it's an intuitive, unplanned experience. Getting into a granfalloon, on the other hand, usually involves showing two forms of ID.

For most of the past 50 years, computers have been on the side of the granfalloons, good at maintaining bureaucratic structures and blind to more nuanced social interactions. But a new kind of software called social-network mapping promises to change all that. Instead of polishing up the org chart, the new social maps are designed to locate karasses wherever they emerge. Mapping social networks turns out to be one of those computational problems— like factoring pi out to a hundred decimal points or rendering complex light patterns on a 3-D shape— that computers can do effortlessly if you give them the right data.

At the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference last week, I came about a fascinating discussion called "Revenge of the User" given by Danah Boyd, a Ph.D., candidate at the University of California at Berkeley. While primarily about the ways people use so-called "social software" Web sites (Friendster, Orkut, LinkedIn, etc.), it also reflected the work she'd done for her Master's thesis: "Faceted Identity: Managing representation in a digital world."

Does The Internet Help Or Hurt Social
Relationships... Again

Does The Internet Help Or Hurt Social
Relationships... Again
12/30/2004 05:04 AM
Just how many times do we need people to come out with studies claiming that, somehow, the internet hurts people's ability to socialize? It seems like one comes out every so often, but the details are always sketchy. The latest one is a followup to one a few years ago, but this one claims it has more proof that the internet hurts our socializing. Of course, the details suggest this really depends heavily on how you define socializing. People who use the internet do tend to watch less TV and spend less time face-to-face with others. They also get less sleep. However, when they're on the internet, nearly 60% of their time is spent communicating with others using email, instant messaging or other tools. The study does note that all that communication usually is more with friends and co-workers, rather than family. Of course, all of this data is aggregate data which can be quite misleading for a variety of reasons. By now it should be incredibly clear that the internet can both help and harm communication, depending on the people in question and how it's used. To generalize across aggregate data seems a bit pointless.

US Patent 6735568: Secrets For
Successful Relationships

There's no end to the number of patents granted just for the sake of having a patent -- because patents lend the mystique of legitimacy and can be used as marketing gimmicks. But the scientific study of relationships is a legitimate field, so it shouldn't be too surprising that EHarmony.com has receive d a patent on relationships, called a "method and system for identifying people who are likely to have a successful relationship." Their rival, Match.com, obviously doesn't want to capitulate and calls their claims "ridiculous at best." The more interesting tidbit is that 20% of the people answering eHarmony's questionaire are rejected outright as not the marrying type. Maybe they're on to something, but that statistic doesn't quite seem to fit with the 50% divorce rate in the US. However, if eHarmony rejects too many people, they might not be very profitable.

Online Business Networks - Building Quality Business Relationships on the Internet

Reach More of the Right People Faster with Less Effort. Business is under pressure now more than ever to do more with less — bigger, better, cheaper, faster. But at what cost? At the cost of human relationships? It doesn't have to be. The internet offers powerful tools to help you find the right people, connect with them, build trust and rapport, and collaborate with them quickly and cost-effectively. This is a good guide with some fine resources. This has been added to my white paper Online Social Networking.
