Challenge to Stowe

Challenge to Stowe 02/05/2005 09:12 PM

challenge.jpgStowe Boyd and I are going to do some debate somewhere - hopefully using Marc Eisenstadt's FlashMeeting technology.

BTW as a quick aside - I just found out that Macromedia charges $7,000 for 2,500 simultaneous users of FlashCom - the server technology behind FlashMeeting. If any coolio open source gal or guy is listening - I'd DIE to get an open source version of FlashCom. I promise i'll hussle the hell out of it - for you.

Anyway - back to Stowe.

Stowe seems to grok the absurdness of talking about talking - but what will he say when our Marqui program starts conversations and memes around actual subjects like "How Marqui saved me money" or "a Marqui a day - keeps my IT dept. at bay".

I can't wait to debate Stowe. I'm gonna pull out all my techniques at public performance, diaphragm support and snide combacks. All the techniques John Kerry had none of. Ask somebody about the debate Dave Winer and I did at a Stewart Alsop Agenda conference back in 1988.

:-)

One thing Stowe is right about - I was iritated with Marqui. And they didn't fire me!

And Stowe is all wigged out that Marqui would want to sponsor our debate. DUDE - haven't you gotten the point yet?

ARE YOU SPELLING MARQUI's name right?

Good - then case solved.

Server Break-in Challenge: First one to break in, leave a file in the root, and take the machine offline wins the contest.

Are you an Internet security expert at heart or by profession? Ever thought of trying your skill at a professionally set up server? If you are ready, enter.

The Linux Server Break-in challenge. You will have a server available on the Internet 96 hours without interruption starting from 9 March 2005 2 AM IST. However, the server's life on the Net is in your hands.

This server won't be protected by firewall. There won't be any fake demons or honeypots as well. It will be running all the services normally found in a regular Linux distribution and more.

I don't quite get the point, but I rarely do.

EFF challenge privacy ruling

EFF challenge privacy ruling 09/07/2004 10:52 AM
Back in June, a court ruled that a ISP who read users emails (without consent) had not acted illegally. Essentially, a Bookstore owner who offered free email accounts via his website monitored emails from competitors, such as Amazon, and then used the information to his advantage. The court ruled that he had not violated Wiretap laws. Kevin Bankston, an attorney from the EFF, remarked that "by interpreting the Wiretap Act's privacy protections very narrowly, this court has effectively given Internet communications providers free rein to invade the privacy of their users for any reason and at any time".

Worrying stuff. However, the EFF is asking for the case to be heard again by the first circuit court of Appeals. arguing that the re-trial is necessary because "the Councilman decision disrupts the traditional understanding of Internet surveillance laws, raising significant constitutional questions under the Fourth Amendment." They continue, remarking that the "decision effectively rewrites the field of Internet surveillance law in ways that Congress never intended".

The EFF, Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), and the American Library Association (ALA), all hope to reverse the decision in a bid for privacy online. If you want to help them, join up and become a member of a great group.

US and Big Sugar challenge WHO Plan

US and Big Sugar challenge WHO Plan 01/22/2004 02:12 AM
US and Big Sugar challenge WHO Obesity Plan William Steiger, of the US Department of Health and Human Services sent a 28-page letter to the World Health Organization on January 5th. On behalf of the Bush Administration, he writes "rigorous scientific studies do not clearly show that marketing fast foods or high calorie foods to consumers increases their risk of becoming obese. Nor do scientific studies definitively link particular foods, such as soft drinks or juices, or foods high in fat or sugar, to a higher risk of obesity." Attacking the science, protecting the status quo, it's a familiar tactic.

The WHO's efforts to combat worldwide obesity, and the reactions of US Sugar and Food Manufacturers were already discussed here last year. Now that the plan is outlined, after 3 years of work, it recommends "advising people to limit sugar and refined foods, restricting junk food marketing, improving food labeling and raising prices on unhealthy foods". The US, however, is demanding strong changes before it signs off.

SP2 Bit Torrent Legal Challenge

SP2 Bit Torrent Legal Challenge 08/11/2004 05:20 PM

Download the Windows XP Service Pack 2: The guys who were doing Microsoft a favor by pushing Service Pack 2 via Bit Torrent got slapped down by Redmond.

Microsoft sent DMCA takedown notices to our two webhosts, one of which was just linking to a torrent file on another server. We've stood up to these kinds of legal threats before (see the Grey Tuesday protests), but we decided not to bother this time, because we started this site primarily as a demonstration and to that end it's already been a huge success.

The challenge of partial trust 05/24/2004 10:31 AM
Over the weekend I upgraded a kid's PC from Win98 to XP. I'd been dragging my heels because Win98 was "good enough" for games, IM, and writing school reports, but this installation had long since reached its half-life. Also, I was curious to see what a 98-to-XP upgrade would be like, never having done one. So I fired up the installer and posted the kid on guard to alert me when intervention was required. ...
