screen shot of labels menuThere’s a piece of software I use that has this Labels menu that freaks me out.

It’s okay until I look at the Yellow label. Then it becomes like one of those weird left-brain/right-brain experiments. I can feel the conflict in my head. It’s like a denial-of-service attack—my brain goes into a loop.

I don’t know how this happened—I don’t recall ever customizing anything label-related.

Bush Insists on Iraq-Al Qaeda Links Despite Report
Not knowing when to give up and admit that he was wrong, Mr. Bush is digging in his heels and insisting, in spite of the 9/11 commision's findings to the contrary, that Saddam Hussein and Al-Queda are linked.

Said Mr. Bush, "The reason I keep insisting that there was a relationship between Iraq and Saddam and al Qaeda is because there was a relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda."

I guess that'll be good enough for just under half the population.

To Invade Or Not To Invade?
Many have expressed the sentiment that unilaterally invading other countries can be justified as serving the best interests of its people. We can all agree that brutal dictatorships are a bad thing. What should be done when they are identified? Engagement or invasion? Should cognitive dissonance by our leaders be ignored and/or accepted? Are double standards justified by financial interests? Here is another case where all litmus tests fail.

Cognitive biases and other fun tricks

Cognitive biases and other fun tricks 04/06/2005 09:38 PM
You are very bad at making decisions. Welcome to the world of cognitive biases. They are why it is so easy to see c onspiracies in the death of microbiologists, to be unaware of how incompetent we are, to regret our bids on eBay, and to be s uperstitious rationalists. Perhaps you should learn to use them before you are taken in. Finally, cognitive biases are why you will remember the end of this po

FCC

EFF's cognitive radio comments to the
FCC
05/06/2004 03:08 AM
I've just turned in EFF's comments to the FCC's "Cognitive Radio" docket, which asked (among other things) whether the Commission should regulate Americans' access to digital-to-analog converters and whether Trusted Computing should be mandated for software defined radios (we didn't much like these ideas).
EFF asks the Commission to consider the question of enforcement separately from the question of functionality. The Commission should allow this proceeding, and others like it, to consider the question of the characteristics of the best possible design and operation of flexible radios without regard to enforcement questions. It should allow American technologists to build the devices that make most efficient use of spectrum and allow the greatest amount of speech over the public's airwaves.

As each new type of device and operational norm is approved, the Commission shoul dask, separately, how best to police the airwaves in light of the fact that the newly approved devices will soon proliferate. It must assume that Americans should and will acquire the best and most-capable radios possible and determine how to address the problems that may arise from this reality.

Further, the Commission should seek to backstop enforcement by hardening existing radio applications against harmful interference, spoofing and other attacks: for example,if air-traffic control signals carried cryptographically secured signatures, the risk of spoofed signals would be greatly reduced. Our government has already required that airlines install reinforced cockpit doors: reinforcing the cockpit radios is a logical next step.

Cognitive Personal Assistant (No Dental)

Cognitive Personal Assistant (No Dental) 06/07/2004 02:25 PM

ComputerWorld's FutureWatch profiles Carnegie Mellon's Radar project (Reflective Agent with Distributed Adaptive Reasoning) which aims to build a computer-based administrative assistance that can intelligently guess what tasks need to be performed to help you in your daily routine.

For instance, suppose a manager receives an e-mail from a colleague requesting some slides. Fahlman and his team are trying to optimize the Radar system to understand the request at a basic level, draft a response and notify the manager with a message like, "Here's my proposed answer; do you accept this?" and then await the manager's response.

Radar isn't intended to act just as an e-mail filtering system, Fahlman says. As a text-in, text-out system, there's "a huge opportunity" for one Radar system to "talk" with another Radar system, schedule meetings and draw information from or post it to a company's Web site, he explains.

Emerging Tech's self-organizing
conference-within-a-conference

Emerging Tech's self-organizing
conference-within-a-conference
12/20/2003 09:44 PM
At this year's O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference, there are 27 night sessions reserved from allocation by the organizers, left open to be a "self organizing conference-within-a-conference." The idea is that ETCON attendees propose sessions on the open wiki, and vote on which they'd prefer to attend.
We're not looking for polished presentations. We'd prefer "white board" sessions on your works-in-progess, rough demonstrations with promise, concept and code (with an emphasis on running code, even if it doesn't yet fully represent the concept). You should be prepared to take input, answer questions, engage in discussion, and be open to altering your conceptions and mucking about in your source. Oh, and have a good deal of fun while you're at it.
